I wouldn't get into the North south issue! Am sure several folks in the north know Sanskrit. My parents learnt it. I haven't.
Re: Isn’t Khalis (Shudh) Hindi mean Sanskrit?
aapkaa prayatn saraahniye hai! aap avashya ek din Hindi ke vidduaanoN meN se ek hoNge.
btw, a little correction:
Maharaja = Mahaaraaj [better word is mahodai/shrimaan/shrimaanjii/aadarRNiiye]
maansikh = maansik [maansi=mental]
shabdh = shabd [there is letter ‘DHA’ in it rather than ‘DA’]
haanikara = haani-kaarak
keep trying, it’s not too hard. ![]()

Re: Isn't Khalis (Shudh) Hindi mean Sanskrit?
@muqawwee123 ...
I dont know if South Indians speak better sanskrit that North Indians. When I was a student (not sure if it has changed now), we had an option of choosing to learn sanskrit as a First language in school . It was offered by many erputable schools and convents too not just hindu religious schools. My class in 8th standard had 5 sections. Except for 12 or so everybody opted to learn Sanskrit as a first language . This included people of other faiths too. The reason being that study of Sanskrit improved study of math. This led to me learning the language as the first language from class 8-12 and 2 years of undergraduate degree. That is a total of 7 years.I do know that students of classical literature in the south will have to learn sanskrit as a language at the masters level even if their language of study is the south Indian language. This is mainly due to the dependence and similarities between the 2 lassical languages. All 4 south Indian languages along with sanskrit are considered as classical languages in India.Dravidian languages show extensive lexical (vocabulary) borrowing, but only a few traits of structural (either phonological or grammatical) borrowing from Sanskrit, whereas Sanskrit shows more structural than lexical borrowings from the Dravidian languages.In addition, a number of grammatical features of Vedic Sanskrit not found in its sister Avestan language appear to have been borrowed from Dravidian languages. These include the gerund, which has the same function as in Dravidian, and the quotative marker iti.
So I can say that my generation were taught sanskrit as a language in schools and learnt urduish Hindi to an extent watching Bollywood movies. But I am not saying that Hindi as a language was not offered in schools just that Sanskrit or local language we studied as the first language.We had to learn 3 languages- our native language or language of the state was compulsary, then english which was also compulsory. The 3rd language was a choice between Hindi, Sanskrit and French. Most of my generation chose Sanskrit.

Kalya, Aarogya, niruja and swastha..(Sanskrit) which of these 3 words can replace tandurusti in shuddh Hindi? For nahaana can Snaana (Sanskrit) or its variant be used? ![]()
Re: Isn’t Khalis (Shudh) Hindi mean Sanskrit?
Interesting. How does Sanskrit help in learning Maths?
Re: Isn’t Khalis (Shudh) Hindi mean Sanskrit?
Dunno
But it was observed by everyone that kids who were good in Sanskrit excelled in maths. That is a belief in the south that was true in many cases that I observed, One kid’s mathematical ability improved leap and bounds after he started learning Sanskrit. I tutored this kid when I was in college . 7th class he was struggling . By mid 8th math came easier to him. I saw improvement in my one mathematical capacity. Study of Sanskrit meant the grammer not just alphabet and few spoken words. Here are some interesting articles…
