When new doors you didn’t even know existed open all around you? I might self combust with excitement at any moment. I am just a measly BA Psych near completion and I just got this position to work with neurosurgeons, attend ungodly hour meetings with neurosurgeons and doctors about whether epilepsy patients are eligible for surgery, deal with non-seizure disorder people who have psychoses and convergent disoder, community adjustment with epileptics, and research. At times like these I feel that all the doors in my life are flung open for me and I can do anything. Despite the fact that I might die of an ulcer from stress, I am so excited, you CANNOT believe. I get a chance to play with the bigwhigs and wax hopefully intellectual at rounds and meetings.
Re: Isn't it grand?
Wow, that's really good. It's so difficult just to get voluntary placements in Psychological settings due to the confidentiality issue, but you seem to have been at the right place at the right time. Sounds quite interesting actually, have fun and good luck!
Re: Isn’t it grand?
Stress does not CAUSE ulcer, so dont worry about peptic ulcer being the cause of your death.
I am exited for you. Neurosurgeons are unequivocally the smartest people on earth, right after the physicists.
Re: Isn’t it grand?
Umm don’t you remember the case of the guy who had an opening in his stomach to the outside of his body and that was the only way he could feed himself. When he was stressed out, they could observe the inside of his stomach and see an increase in stomach acid production and a reddening of the stomach lining with prolonged stress. May stress does not CAUSE ulcers, but it can play a role.
Anyway Dope, I think you are a med student. Can I bug you with questions if I have any? ![]()
Re: Isn’t it grand?
Congratulations ![]()
Latest research indicates that ulcers are cause by bacteria. You are probably going to be plagued by high blood pressure instead of ulcers ![]()
Re: Isn’t it grand?
Stress is a contributing factor, yes. Sure Sarah you can bug me. But remember, i am only a first year on sabbatical:D.
Re: Isn’t it grand?
Congratz Sarah!! ![]()
Being an accounting major I have always dreamt of working for a Big 4 firm. Four months ago I started interviewing with Deloitte & Touché LLP (in terms of revenues it’s the 2nd largest of the Big 4). That was my 1st formal interview. It was nice, it was nothing like I had imagined. No questions related to accounting what so ever, just casual conversation. That day I had two interviews 45 minutes each, one with the partner and other with a manager. After that I had several interviews with partners, managers, seniors and got to meet with staff accountants too. Had lunches, dinners and breakfasts too, can you imagine that!!! Finally I was invited for an office visit. There again I was introduced to people I hadn’t met earlier and spent 30 minutes with each person through out my stay. Some of these people were managers and others were seniors. Oh and I also got to meet this Director, she is some one big I guess, and she spoke really fast. I remember I started speaking fast until I realized I was eating words so I slowed down a bit. At the end of the office visit I was told I would be contacted in a week or two and that they would let me know their decision. THREE weeks had passed and I hadn’t heard from them, so I started telling myself that I was lucky enough to have interviewed with one of the 4 biggest accounting firms in the world. I made it through 4 rounds of interview and many don’t even make through the 1st round. Then I received something in mail… wow this UPS trucked stopped right in front of my apartment and he delivered a big brown box. Must be a mistake I thought for a second until I saw label, it read “Deloitte & Touché”. Opened it up and there was another colored box inside that read “Think internship, Think Deloitte”, it had candies and other stuff and I was like yay I have made it!!! I was so excited, words cannot describe. Over the weeks I received a contract that stated my pay, obligations and so on so forth. Just last week I got my bonus in mail. And they paid me a hefty bonus, at least that’s what my brother and friends think. On top of that I will be making good money during my internship. Well my internship starts January 2006 and will be for approx 3 months. I was told that 90% of the interns get full time job offer, I hope I get a full time offer.
It is not the pay I am excited about, I would be ready to do no-pay internship for a Big 4! It’s the name of the firm and experience that counts. Once you have worked for these people you start getting amazing offers from all sorts of corporations. You have a bright future if you are with a Big 4. And who knows better than me, I saw my cousin become Managing Partner of Ernst & Young. It is not surprising to see CEO’s, CFO’s etc having a background in public accounting. Other thing I was excited about was during one of the events organized by Deloitte where all other candidates were also present, I had learned that there were roughly 100 students from McCombs School of Accounting (UT Austin) which was ranked number 1 in the nation couple years ago, 50 students from Cox School of Business (Southern Methodist University), 30 students from Texas A&M and only 4 students from my university. I felt lucky that I was amongst the 4 students from our University but at the same time I was kind of intimidated to see all these nerds from some of the top schools in U.S. I was like “dude you don’t stand a chance so just chill and try to have a nice time…” hahaha.. that was my attitude. After I received my internship offer I felt a whole lot better.
Well I am hoping all goes well and that I get a full time offer.
Re: Isn't it grand?
SD, hey you understand totally that feeling of piss-my-pants excitement. I can't wait to start working hard come Friday and for the future. Good luck with your internship and I hope you get a job with the firm.
Re: Isn't it grand?
Congrats Sarah!
This is indeed is a good opening and a start to a good and interesting career.
Will you be the only psychologist or will you be working with others. Physicians/surgeons tend to 'throw' cases to psychologist once they feel incapable of helping the patient much. Don't be discouraged by it.
Re: Isn’t it grand?
Wow - Congratulations Sarah and SugarFree :k: and Good Luck!
Re: Isn't it grand?
That sounds so exciting...I am jealous, I am stuck with weirdos who dont know what they are doing!
