Isnt India more secular than US and UK?

Re: Isnt India more secular than US and UK?

Thanks for clearing this up. A lot of times people present what they think as facts.

Re: Isnt India more secular than US and UK?

This is why the muslims are agains BJP and call it a religious fanatic party, because it wants uniform civil code for all citizens.

Re: Isnt India more secular than US and UK?

Secular doesnt mean offending religous sensitivities however...
Its not about being able to eat a burger outside the red fort, or drawing a picture of the prophet mohamad that defines being secular...
Whats important is that the govt approach both situations as neutral party and not take sides...
The ability to overlook such behavior, is a sign of a secular society not a secualr govt. Secular society is yet to develop in most develoed countries...
I would honestly like to see anyone here go and burn a bible, anywhere in America or even Europe, in public, and see the reaction.

Re: Isnt India more secular than US and UK?

And again, allowing polygamy, or the expression of any Relgious beliefs isnt against secular ethos either I think.
A secular govts responsibilites shouldnt be to derpive society of relgion, but to simply remain neutral in religous matters... So long as the expression of those relgigous rights isnt openly confrontational of other relgious groups...
Polygamy becomes a problem when the govt doesnt allow other groups to practice their own religous rights. Thus the govt can be seen as biased towards one group at the expense of the other.
Its all about giving everyone EQUAL rights without the govt taking sides and remaining neutral.
Indian govt has on many occasion been seen to favor one relgious group over another and thus Indian secularism has some way to go before it can be truly secular.
So ultimately the secular govt job is to be a neutral regulatory budy on religous activity.

Re: Isnt India more secular than US and UK?

I agree to some points but allowing polygamy for certain religion and not for other is non-secular. Here the law is made to satisfy a religion. There has to uniform civil code for a government to be called secular.

Re: Isnt India more secular than US and UK?

what i feel is polygamy is bad and many people can misuse it , it should be ban for all religions, why there is polygamy only for males and not females

Re: Isnt India more secular than US and UK?

You may be right but thats another discussion suitable for religious forum.

Re: Isnt India more secular than US and UK?

Regardless of secular or not.............I feel for a civilized society polygamy should not be allowed at all...........not for males nor for females.

Re: Isnt India more secular than US and UK?

yep you are true
even though it is allowed in islam, most of the desi muslims are monogamy

Re: Isnt India more secular than US and UK?

Well that's because Desi Biwian are too much to handle, you cannot handle more than one...;-) !!

Re: Isnt India more secular than US and UK?

and expensive too -:)

Re: Isnt India more secular than US and UK?

Polygamy or not isnt really relevant... Point is that if the govt is willing to allow one religous group to practice its relgious traditions, it should allow all relgious groups the same favor...
Polygamy is something that can be compramised on since its not essential to Muslim practice.. Other things such as allowing Muslims the right to take breaks for prayers is something the govt should be obliged to accomodate.
But again, there cant be any bias, all religous groups must be allowed to express their religous rights.

Re: Isnt India more secular than US and UK?

secular duh! infact they are soo secular, that they make china blush

Re: Isnt India more secular than US and UK?

what:eek:
india is secular
:hayaa:

Re: Isnt India more secular than US and UK?

With small blips, yes it does seem to be a secular country but I'm not sure how much of it is due to intrinsics and how much due to electability.

If the ruling party coalitions doesn't need the minority votes, will. Its behaviour still be secular? Viewed that way, may be we can concede that the system is rdy but the people are just getting there.

Whether all that is a good thing only time can tell. But what's clear is they're treading some new waters

Re: Isnt India more secular than US and UK?

What about the law, that monkeys (and cows) are allowed to roam the cities freely, even if they attack human beings, simply because they are the sacred hindoo animals?

Re: Isnt India more secular than US and UK?

^ first of all in Hinduism all living things are respected and loved and it's not Hindoo, it's Hindu....I think you know that. Let's try to respect all religions. I know you would be pretty pissed if somebody here disrespected Islam.

Anyway, in terms of making India more secular, I agree with some of the other posters in that there needs to be uniform civil code for all religions including Islam( no multiple wives) in India and political parties like BJP and Muslim League need to become more secular and lose their religious affiliation if not, they need to not exist.

like one of the other posters had mentioned in another thread, something like "the Maintenance of Religious Harmony Act" like in Singapore should be enforced but not as extreme.

Re: Isnt India more secular than US and UK?

You didn't answer my question.

Hindoo and Hindu are both pronounced the same, so what is the difference? I am not offended when Israelis call us Moslems.

Re: Isnt India more secular than US and UK?

How about I-Slam or Is-Lame? Not that I get offended by Hindoo or will try to offend any muslims by this. Just making you aware of your decent upbringing :).

Re: Isnt India more secular than US and UK?

If it sounds the same, then what is the difference? Islam was revealed in Arabic, not English, so I don't give 2 ****s about how it is spelled in English. Was Hindooism revealed in English?
