Rather than better technology or faster Internet access, Hoodbhoy has written, "Muslims need freedom from dogmatic beliefs and a culture that questions rather than obeys."

I am going to wait for a few more responses before I go further with this thread. Just to further the discussion its going to be linked to the Arab spring and the way the Islamist parties have won in Tunsia. Will win in Egypt and currently enjoy power in Libya.
So go ahead and most more things that come to your mind when you hear these terms.

Despite my efforts to bend those understood definitions away from whom they are attributed I believe when used by the public at large they mean:
Islamist - A negative take on "Muslim" one who "defines Islam as the way that should be imposed on others to follow"
Jihadist - A negative take on "Muslim" one who "promotes or favours war and fighting claiming it to be his Divine duty to do so"
Extremist - A negative take on "People" (but now often used as a synonym for the above) who "use zealous uncompromising methods often literalistic and skewed understandings to practice their beliefs - either religious or political"

I honestly don't like these terms...first of all what is an Islamist and whats a moderate Islamist. Why can't we just be Muslim..I am a Muslim and try to follow it to the best of my ability ( okay maybe not but I don't need a label to look good to the western world)

the first two are terms thrown around without much rigor in the western media to describe religious extremists of muslim backgrounds. and extremist is someone who is unreasonable and violent.

I hear 'moderate muslims' being used to described the scholars, muslim councils etc who basically condemn the actions of the cave-sitting-extremists and basically use the term to distance themselves from these lot. I've noticed that whenever theres someone being blown up etc etc and the muslims get blamed, the kamikaze lot are bunched together as terrorists and extremists, while the sane, sensible muslim is used to show how these actions are not of islam etc etc

Also do you lot remember that Anders Breivik guy from Norway who massacred those kids at the camps a coupla months back? And how everyone was ready to brand him a terrorist until they found out he was anti-islamic? Threw everyone off course a bit, didn't it?

The first thing I think is that whoever uses the term "moderate Islamist" is a confused Muslim journalist, most likely from the subcontinent. Reason being that the western journalists will not make a distinction from one Islamist to another ... to them they are one brand of Muslim. For the Muslim however the term Islamist may not have immediate negative connotations unless "qualified" with terms such as "moderate", "liberal", "conservative", etc ... I feel this aspect of subcontinent "terminology" is void of sense ..., but perhaps they use the word "moderate" to denote something else ... such as "people who live Islam and will choose Shari'ah, but not through violent means" and so on. So really the qualifier "moderate" is vague and itself needs to be qualified further.
The term Islamist is linguistically incorrect ... because it infers there is such a thing as Islamism ... the suffix "ism" means "the ideology of" ... whereas that is already present in the name "Islam" which means "the ideology of submission (to God)" ... which follows that Muslim is a follower of Islam therefore an Islamist is the incorrect formulation of what is a Muslim. To muddy the waters further if people use terms such as "moderate Islamist" there is just as much an oxymoron as the term "moderate Muslim" - a Muslim is person who believes in all of the elements of the Islamic 'aqeedah, and hence the name linguistically infers that a person who takes what he wants from the 'aqeedah and leaves others is a "moderate Muslim" - in which case Christians and Jews and many others would also be "moderate Muslims" ... !!!
