I got that from common sense. If you are a non ahle-kitaab nonmuslim (ex. atheist) in a muslim country, and you’re told that you can be killed for practicing (or is it preaching? I guess this will never be conclusively decided in this thread, as usual), then wouldn’t you get the hell out of that country?

Sorry, but your common sense is not correct here, you are again making ASSUMPTION that non-ahle kitaab will be killed in Islamic state its not correct. They are not allowed to “preach”, but no problems in practise.
