Okay, this isn’t a hijab vs non hijab debate or an “attack” on hijabis, just my own thoughts, so please no cyber-fatwas or bitching and whining from either end
I’ve always been intrigued at the term Islamic clothing. I don’t believe there is such a thing. Clothing is clothing, thread made into cloth and sewn together. It’s how you wear it is indicative of your faith. But, according to some Muslims certain clothing is “haram” to wear as well as look at and I have to wonder why. I was on one of those fatwa websites last night and someone submitted a question stating she worked in a clothing shop that sold with “un-Islamic” clothing (skirts, tank tops, pants etc) and the majority of the customers were non-Muslims. The scholar declared that her income was haram. Another example, I bought a halter top last summer, to wear under my shirts and stuff, and my cousin said “And you call yourself Muslim?” Things like those just boggle my mind. What makes a piece of clothing “Un-Islamic”? I always figure, you can wear whatever you want.
Again, please no childish bullsiht in this thread. Thanks
You unislamic you, how dare you put on a halter top and wore it under your shirt? Wear it without the shirt...Is your cousin male or female who made that emark. If he is male, ask him how many times will he drool over a girl he sees with a halter top?
That's pretty ridiculous to say that certain clothing is haraam if a woman wears it discreetly. Don't Muslim women love to wear lingerie and pretty underwear. Ofcourse, but not everyone has to know about it. Clothing is not Un-Islamic but the way it is worn or a woman's intention in wearing it may be Un-Islamic.
Sara you should read...Jane Kramer's article on the Hijab issue in France in Nov 11th New Yorker. It will confirm some perspectives for you. OD you not find it odd, that men are passing religious edicts on women's dress? I have an edict. Every man who sees a woman in a haltertop, should be blinded, if gets aroused. What do you think of that?
my moms pretty strict about what i wear.....at first it pissed me off....but now, i get why....cuz all the little girls on the block are beginning to grow up.....and most of them are mutulating into total sluts.....
anyways, bak to the topic....i buy tank tops and stuff like that to wear under my dress shirts and kameezes all the time...
^ yah my mom used to be really strict about my clothes when I was younger too. it pissed me off and annoyed me. The more she pushed me to wear baggy long sleeve shirts in the summer, the more I felt good about wearin miniskirts my first few months at college. Stupid and immature I know (not the case anymore thank God). I know I'll have a lot worse to deal with when i have my own kids :(
I think Islam asks people to modest... Anything, including clothes that are not modest are thus unIslamic... BUT... With that in mind, every society defines modesty differently... So while a conservative skirt that only shows some leg in America and Europe is modest, its not the case In Pakistan and other such countries. Thus, Islamic clothing is defined by which society you belong to, or where you are living. Any item of cloting which conforms to the ideals of that society is Islamic...
^^ hah apparently not for those 350 lbs. latino cows :yukh:
…and no, thongs are not haram…as long as ur wearing pants/ jeans lol!!..i mean, the reason for thongs is cuz they’re more comfortable than big arse breifs…
…u dont gotta worry about getting wedgies and all that…
so no, as long as it’s not showing…same goes for all other under garments
sara bajiiiiiiii!!! you wore skirts??? i would’ve never guessd!!! :nono2:…aight i dont blame u…the crowd can drift a person’s mind easily… it’s good to know ur a little angel now :halo:
there is no such thing as "islamic clothing" as long what you wear meets the criteria of hijab ie covers your awrah then there is no problem so that could be a long skirt with a baggy full sleeved top or shalwar kameez and chador...
islam is not specific to any race culture or ethnicity hence depending on what country you are from you can adapt the styles to ensure that you are covered properly when leavin the house or when in the presence of non-mahrems.
sara you should be careful what websites you go on....always check out the people who answers these fatawas...and do your own research.......
D2A, I went on Islam-qa.com I wasn’t really researching anyhthing specific, just looking through the questions and some of them (along with things I see on GS and in rael life) just seems so ridiculous to me. I mean, Allah gave you a brain, and common sense, why not use it? Is someone going to hell coz they wear a thong under their jilbab?
