ISLAMABAD: Speeding motorists who thought they could get away with traffic violations at night will have to slow down as the Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) has now acquired night-vision speed cameras.

The new cameras have been in operation since last week especially on Khayaban-e-Iqbal, which runs alongside the Margalla Hills. “We are handing out tickets for speed violations at night for about a week now,” a senior patrolling officer told Daily Times on condition of anonymity. The model ITP, constituted on the instructions of Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz earlier this year, already has equipment to check over-speeding during the day but lacked night-time equipment to do so. The officer said that over 21 new cameras had been procured and would be installed at different locations. “People are becoming wary of these cameras and are slowing down, but mostly the teenagers or drivers in government vehicles still indulge in over-speeding,” he said.

Subhan’Allah. I’m impressed. But can these systems be really installed all over the country?
