CM, daughter go on signal violation spree

By Mohammad Asghar

ISLAMABAD, Jan 8: A new example of traffic rules violations and rash driving was set by the Punjab chief minister and his daughter in the federal capital. The ticket for violation of red-light was sent to CM office in Lahore after his squad refused to accept it, while his daughter accepted her ticket, Dawn has learnt.

The CM’s daughter was travelling in a car (LWQ-3347) when its driver Mohammad Afzal crossed the red-light at Faisal Chowk on Monday. The driver was served with a ticket of Rs500.

Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi’s motorcade on way to Sector F-8/3 late Saturday violated traffic signal on Margalla road, sources in the police department requesting not to be named told Dawn.

On seeing the red-light, the CM’s squad members got out and started thumping the vehicles already waiting in queues for the green light ahead of the convoy. It caused panic among the people who removed their cars aside on seeing the armed policemen around their cars.

The on-duty traffic police personnel immediately informed their highups and the Rawalpindi police officials about the traffic rules violations by the vehicles of Pindi police. The sources said while the CM’s motorcade was crossing the red-light at Zafar Chowk, several vehicles which were following the green-light narrowly escaped collision.

In the meantime, the ICT traffic staff started chasing the CM’s motorcade and finally got them at a house in G-10 sector. The CM’s squad members refused to accept the ticket and moved towards Aiwan-i-Sadr.

The traffic staff did not give up their efforts and again tried to serve the ticket on the police squad but they again refused to accept it, the sources said.

The ICT police had no option but to withdraw the ticket or sent it to the CM by mail. Finally, the ticket for Rs500 was sent to the CM office.

Re: Islamabad police are relentless... In a good way.

lol well I cant say they are what they used to be back in the 80s, but Islamabad Police is unique! Being an Islamabadi, I can relate to some funny experiences. I mentioned this before but a distant relative of mine from Sialkot was here to get his UK visa as hes an exporter. He got caught by a polciya for broken license plate. Apparently he flashed a note at him thinking he was still in Sialkot and spent the night in jail, and since hes a very rich and influential guy, that became a headline in Sialkot!

I have been pulled over about 2 times by Islamabadi police but it was for something really minor, the officer politely asked me to get my plates format correct.

Re: Islamabad police are relentless… In a good way.

LOL… Thats funny… To bad for your relative though.
Still, this improvemnt is more then welcome… I wish they could emulate this in other larger cities.. A professional police force would do wonders…

Re: Islamabad police are relentless... In a good way.

well done, though ticket should be multiplied by the offences.

Re: Islamabad police are relentless… In a good way.

The offender should have been arrested for this… But I guess you have to settle for whatever small victory comes around.

Re: Islamabad police are relentless... In a good way.

yup, Islamabad police is great, probably the least corrupt police force in pakistan maybe even all of south asia!

Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi does not have a daughter

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervez Elahi is suing an English-language newspaper for Rs 200 million over a story published on January 9 alleging that the chief minister’s daughter had violated traffic rules in Islamabad.

Advocate M Baleegh-Uz-Zaman Chaudhree, representing the chief minister, has served a legal notice for the payment of Rs 200 million as damages on the editor, printer, publisher and correspondent of the newspaper (not Daily Times), according to a press release from the Punjab Directorate General of Public Relations.

According to the legal notice, the chief minister was “shocked” by the story because he does not have a daughter. “Moreover, the reckless statement was extremely libellous, scandalous, defamatory and antagonistic to the ethical code of the practice of journalists … [and] the news item was totally baseless, inaccurate, unfair and violative of the principles of professional conduct … The said defamatory statement was ostensibly based on malafide and ulterior motives to malign and ridicule the social behaviour of his client and his family with further object of relegating and undermining his political career. Similarly, the prominent heading and two columns coverage given to the news item tended to undermine his integrity as chief executive of the province and in turn malign the government,” says the press release. The notice seeks the Rs 200 million payment within 14 days, otherwise the chief minister would move for civil and criminal proceedings against the accused. staff report

Re: Islamabad police are relentless… In a good way.

:hehe: maybe. time for the newspaper to contact its source (if there was any) and produce the ghost who accepted the ticket. i’m sure islamabad police has the record of the tickets issued. or maybe some journos working for some newspapers have very fertile minds?

Re: Islamabad police are relentless… In a good way.

Another development, apparently the CM doesnt even have a daughter… I think the person claimed to driving around the daughter of the CM just to get out of getting the ticket… Nice try!

There is as such no question of any traffic violation arising out of the movement of any VVIP in Pakistan what to speak of the chief minister.

The Senior Superintendent of Police traffic Islamabad Dr Azam Temuri had confirmed to Dawn that the car driver Muhammad Afzal had introduced to the traffic official the lady sitting in the car as CM’s daughter.

Re: Islamabad police are relentless... In a good way.

musharraf lives in islamabad thats the only reason that might have happened.the police and the trafic police in karachi and lahore would never do that .they just prey on the poor and the non-vips to make money out of them.
