Our token Pakistan representative, Ash-Har Qureshi, the Islamabad bureau chief for CNN, sat grinning like a schoolboy through most of the hour-and-a-half session. His demeanour suggested that either he couldn’t quite get over the fact that he’d been invited to sit on a panel, or else that the topic was so axiomatic that he couldn’t really add anything to it. When the moderator asked him for some closing thoughts, he grinned shyly, shaking his head to signal, no. It was atrocious and humiliating to have a speaker like this be virtually the only representative of Pakistan. The man had nothing enlightening whatsoever to say. My brief one-sided conversation with him after the panel despairingly confirmed my initial negative impression of him. Internationally, Pakistan is a nation in disgrace. We do not need to compound our shame in the world.
