It's a very sad situation and yes, Islam does permit open discussion.
But don't forget, not every person is a militant. If he/she killed another person in the act of self defence, then it wasn't militancy.

More people are killed in America by Christians in the name of nothing. US has the largest murder rate in the world.
Militant aspects are prevalent in all sections of communities and religions. Killing innocents is condemned by all. Just because it's Islam bashing time, doesn't mean it's always true. Propoganda might be a word worth checking out.
firstly, islam never preaches such violent acts...so if some muslims do it on the name of Islam, they should be brought to justice...
secondly, its the western media which propogates such news of Islamic Terrorism....see what happens in India...even if there is fire in a house, the Indian media staright forward blames Pakistani's and Mulsim fundamentalists....only later they find out that the coz of fire was something else (perhaps, someone left the cylinder open)....
Let us not compare ordinary criminals to Islamic militants.
In many press intervies these militants openly say that they are on a holy jihad and are going to see Allah soon, and abode in paradise.
It is directly related to the teachings of Islam.
