“And of mankind is he who purchases idle talk to mislead (men) from the Path of Allaah . . .” [Luqmaan 31:6]
Tafsir:Imam Ibn Kathir
Allah has sent down the Best Statement, a Book, its parts resembling each other (and) oft-repeated. The skins of those who fear their Lord shiver from it. Then their skin and their heart soften to the remembrance of Allah) (39:23). He connect that with mention of the doomed, those who turn away from the Qur’an and do not benefit from hearing the Words of Allah. Instead, they turn to listening to flutes and singing accompanied by musical instruments. As Ibn Mas`ud commented about the Ayah:
(And of mankind is he who purchases Lahu Al-Hadith to mislead (men) from the path of Allah), he said, "This – by Allah – refers to singing.‘’
Dear readers

Thanks for being so NICE and changing your last Editing.
“[Allaah said to Iblees:] And befool them gradually those whom you can among them with your voice (i.e. songs, music, and any other call for Allaah’s disobedience)…” [al-Israa’ 17:64]
“Do you then wonder at this recitation (the Qur’aan)?
And you laugh at it and weep not,
Wasting your (precious) lifetime in pastime and amusements (singing)”
Ok can u plz give the reference to the hadees u r refering to here, cuz I don't necessarily remeber music being haram. I think what is haram here is praising ne thing but Allah, which is what is in a lot of music now days, adn maybe makes that specific music haram. but if ur not doing that, all ur doing is humming what u would normally say, and making it sound soothing to the ears and making it rhyme. And correct me if I'm wrong but I dont think there is ne thing wrong in singing the Quran, bc it helps u enjoy it even more, and u read it with even more passion, and I don't have the reference to this, but I know for a fact that it says in the Quran to read the Quran like it is something sweet, not like it is a bitter medicene. I mean the whole Quran is written in a poetry format, bc at that time poetry really got to people, and many famous duwas r in the form of poetry and mentioned in the tafsir of Quran. now if ur just simply humming that poetry and making it sound more powerful, what is wrong with that? now music with a wrong message could be haraam, but thats cuz the message itself is haraam, and would be haraam even if it was just spoken and not sung. a music with a good message or no message at all, is not haraam if it is spoken, so why should it be haraam if it is sung? If however there is something in the Quran or sunaah that specifically says humming in nice tones is haram itself, plz disregard my statemet AFTER YOU HAVE POSTED THE REFERENCE FOR UR QUOTE!!!

your falsafa is mind boggling.
you were saying.uff
I'm not sure who 'i the mullah' is here. Though I dont live in a western nation I cant avoid music either. So the issue is not whether I can avoid listening to it, its more so whether it can be considered allowed after such clear warnings against it. The conclusions are not mine or anyone else's, the words of the Prophet are for everyone to read.
ammarr let's not kid ourselves.. even the 'Prophet's words' are a 'consensus' .... there are always opposing views and opinions as to what's actually the 'Prophet's word' and what's a fabrication in his name.
.. and since when did 'idle talk' become 'music'?? where did the Prophet say (please feel free to present narrations independently traceable back to the Prophet and agreed upon by ALL muslims) that instruct us to take this totally unlikely meaning for the term.
until then it's a matter open for debate amongst muslims as a whole.. not each sect rejoicing in what they have and declaring others out of the fold of Islam for not agreeing with their point of view..

of a new innovator. And you know what people will follow it.

Sad isn’t it how Satan can lead so many fools into thinking by committing a grave sin they are earning reward?
In my opinion Sufis have a totally messed up idea about spirituality.
Like I’ve said before and I will say it again… Spirituality and ecstasy are two very different things, the latter can be found in any religion, you can get it from listening to a Hindu Bhajan, Christian Hymn Sufi Qawwali or a Sikh Kirtan but that feeling of being totally at peace, the truly ‘natural’ and just ‘right’ sort of feeling of being close to the Ar-Rahman can only be achieved in Orthodox Islam through submission of the heart and body to the Rabb of the worlds, it’s hard even impossible to put that exact feeling into words… It’s one of the things which sets our religion apart from others, from an early age I’ve been exposed to a lot of different religions and the version of Islam I was bought up with had a heavy dose of Sufism mixed into it and as a small child I would think if Islam is the only truth why do I get this exact same feeling when I’m listening to a polytheistic hymns?
Then later when I researched different religions and sects within Islam I realised that unorthodox versions of Islam had lost it because they had scrapped true spirituality and replaced it with what they picked up from other pagan ideologies around them.
My then version of Islam and other religions consisted of nothing but empty rituals and sensual pleasures (ecstatic feeling caused do to the beat of music because of hormone levels etc.)… Is that all faith has been reduced to? A religion like that is not worth following, weather it’s a full fledge pagan religion or it’s presented under the guise of Islam and sugar coated with a few Arabic and Farsi words…
When I took the path of Orthodox Islam, the path of Monotheism it appealed to both my heart and my intellect. It was the feeling I wanted from a religion. It was ‘ergonomically’ right (lol I know it’s weird using that term here but you know what I mean) it fit into place perfectly like it was meant to and I felt comfortable with it and realised what Deen al-Fitrah really means.
nobody can declare anyone to be out of the fold of Islam on the issue of music. I am not talking about idle talk being considered music (though it is very likely one of the interpretations since it can fall under idle talk). I was talking about the specific prohibition of music in plain words. Such as Abu Bakr (ra) calling them the instruments of satan and the Prophet (saw) not denying that. And the hadith where the Prophet (saw) says that people would one day declare music, zina, and alcohol to be halal.
I have mentioned this article a few times: http://www.islamworld.net/music.html as it exposes the position taken by Yusuf al Qaradwi by quoting ibn hazm’s view only as it agrees with himself!! It also contains an analysis of the ayahs of the Quran often used in this matter, so do go over it. The thing is, there is a consensus on this issue whether Yusuf al qaradwi likes it or not.
r y being sarcastic? I really can’ tell if ur mocking me or just being serious. don’t worry I don’t mind what u mean by it, just wondering cuz I’m a little confused here:konfused:

are these hadiths you mention universally accepted to be correct in all respects.. by all scholars of all sects?? Is there no dispute at all?

there is really no need to go into differences of FIQAH here.
read the ayahs and plz post the related TAFSIRS.
i would appreciate if different Tafsirs can be posted.
I dont think you saw the documentary. The same person you are sending la'nah to was visiting mosques, sitting with scholarly people, joking with madrassa students, trying to get a better understanding. He was seeking knowledge. He was even admitting his faults at times. How many muslims even do that these days? The dude your sending bad-dua to could tommorow end up being a more devoted muslim than yourself.
