While democracy may be an ancient Greek idea, what is uniquely modern is the idea of liberal democracy.
It is based on 2 principles.
1. Democracy i.e. Consent of the governed. Hence regular democratic elections and peaceful transfer of power.
2. Liberalism i.e the idea that humans have inalienable basic rights and it is the job of the govt to protect them. No govt, even democratic one, can legitimately trespass on these rights.
Of course, many democratic govts are illiberal. But non-democratic govts are even more illiberal. The idea of liberal democracy is still the best option out there.
