Islam is easy for those whose inner battery is charged with the fear & love of ALLAH Subhana wa'ta'aala. When the battery gets out of charge, external force is not very effective/ long lasting.
To charge this battery again, one needs 2 qualities:
Strong urge to please ALLAH (do good deeds) & avoid HIS anger (give up bad deeds).
Immensely respect ALLAH *Subhana wa'ta'aala *& everything related to HIM.
^ To achieve these two qualities one needs to sit frequently in the company of pious people & avoid bad companies. Even though it might initially look a bit 'unattractive' compared to those parties/music..etc. of bad companies.

She has a point. While there is no doubt that you are required to strive in the way of Allah (what is religion without a certain level of effort and dedication?), it is also true that mullahs have added a lot of their own BS to make things way more complicated than they have to be.

Islamic teachings are easy and straight forward. Theres not a single thing in Islam that goes against the nature of human. Everything has been balanced in this beautiful religion by Allah. It is true though, that some people took Islam as a mean for creating divisions among Muslims. They dont feel ashamed one bit by declaring anyone non muslim or spreading heresy in the name of Islam. It is a religion of tolerance and Islam stands out with all its true teachings. Unfortunately some muslims want everyone to follow their understanding of Islam or else they're not really Muslims.

Islam is not easy for everyone (specially lazy people like me) by default, but only for those who sincerely strive to please ALLAH with dedication & are willing to face hardships if ALLAH tests them.
We have often heard 'Muslims' complaining that they don't find pleasure in offering salah, zikr, Quran recitation...etc. It is because the tongue that abuses/backbites loses its ability to taste the sweetness of saying "ALLAH" (unless he repents) as pure & impure can't stay together in one place. You have to remove the dirty water (bad habits) from the glass (heart) in order to accommodate the pure water (sunnah's of the Prophet saw)
Same goes for 'eyes', 'ears'....etc.

but the question was rather very simple. It's up to the individual how much he strives to be near Allah. The commands are set by Allah in Quran and the holy prophet pbuh's actions are example for us. Islamic teaching itself is pretty straight forward. There's nothing in Quran or in sunnah of prophet that goes against a human's logic or the nature. Muslims themselves have made Islam confusing for themselves and for other people.
Who follows and who doesnt is up to them. But there is nothing in Islamic teachings that anyone can raise finger on.
Which is why I say that Quran is the 'literal word' of Allah. No changes have been made in it. And science is the 'actions' of Allah. Science cannot go against Allah's words and Allah's words cannot go against Science. They both go hand in hand. ( But thats out of topic, so i'll stop at this point)

I meant what I said earlier, but brother R.A.W. has repeatedly and honestly contextualised it. The default position of Islam is that it is difficult. It may be the natural way, but it is the hardest way to do right. At every step is a hurdle. Islam is seen as the straight path and we are destined upward bound. Those who take life easy will find life easy ... those who want to strive and struggle will be upon the straight path. Why else are we told that Jihad (struggle) is part of Islam if indeed Islam is so easy? The Straight Path is quickest path to connect two places, but viewed from the analogy of a mountain the straightest path to the top is also the steepest path.
I mean look at zakat and fasting and other things your normal mind will tell you that it is not easy.
There are places within the Qur'an that demonstrate this - places that talk about us being tested for our faith ... and places that state we are in disadvantage at arriving to goodness by ourselves. We have been given ego and desire to overcome ... So without effort and taking Islam as it comes without any preparation will mean we wont find it easy ...

Look people are trying to make Islam easy all the time - by trying to make it out that there are no miracles that we need to believe in, some that say we don't have to pray, some that say we don't have to deal out penalties to criminals ... there are many people trying to simplify Islam ... all using the argument that Islam was always meant to be easy.
It is only easy for those who are devoted to it (Wali) ... I said this earlier and R.A.W. has brought a perfect reference from the Qur'an to show this ... (Kashi'un) ... They are the people who when tested with their lifestyle changes, loss of family and other harj, just carry on worshipping their Lord. Other opinions are merely venting out at the Mullahs ... which is really a cop out ... Such people want to blame others for their own insufficient conditions.
We favour sending our kids to secular environments without teaching and becoming familiar with our religious practices makes us become a people who are touch and go with our faith, we make it so easy for ourselves our kids grow up not knowing about Islam ... and then when they see Islam with an untrained heart and unfamiliar mind they find it hard ...

To act upon the teachings of Islam is one thing, and the mere teachings of Islam is another thing. Islamic teachings are easy to understand. Oneness of God, believing in all his prophets, believing in day of judgement etc. 5 daily prayers, paying zakat, observing fasts etc. Now, these are teachings of Islam. Easy to understand and for sure hard to follow.
Then we have Quran and ahadith to have a clear understanding of what Allah and His messenger require from us.
Then we have Muslims creating more and more confusion in what is easy to understand in Quran and ahadith. They come up with some stuff from out of the world..something which Quran and Islamic teachings does not teach but they all say it in the name of Islam and make Islam seem confusing.

Both of you have raised some good points. There is another way to look at it.
Islam doesn't have "hardships" but "restrictions". Just like when you join army (wear uniform) you develop a certain "Mindset" of remaining within certain rules (considering it your duty/responsibility), which your friends (without uniform) might find very difficult to do, because they haven't yet developed that mindset that you have got.
No one has by birth developed the mental/physical stamina & strength to become a good athlete, doctor,...etc. they just develop a certain mindset through hard work, patience & dedication, keeping in view (believing in) the rewards they would get in return. Once that mentality is developed, they find those things very easy to do which others find too difficult.

Example:
I return from gym & am so tired that I fall on the couch. I request my sister to bring me a glass of juice but she says "help yourself". I say," I have just worked out really hard, and its impossible for me to move from this couch". Suddenly my friend calls me and tells me that Saeed Anwar & Junaid Jamshed have arrived to the big Masjid in our city. I jump out of my couch, take a shower, get dressed up and run towards my car. All that hardships & tiredness is suddenly gone (in fact start to look very easy) once I developed the mindset to do something.
That is why they say, anything started is half done. A long journey starts with a small step. Otherwise, even if it is a simple act of salah/ namaz, the Shaitaan & Nafs would continue to stretch it like a rubber, to portray it as a BIG TASK that seems too difficult to do. (but we realize it to be very easy everytime we initiate to do it)

Islam is very hard to make sense of because you need to work very hard to learn all the necessities that help you understand the universal realities, the quran, the hadith and the fiqh, however once you have learned what it takes to understand islam then it is a piece of a cake.
Likewise it is very very hard to follow once you have figured out the program but once you have fallen into related routines then it becomes easier.
To begin with islam poses maximum possible difficulties for people who wish to implement it as a system of governance but once it is in place it brings a lot of ease for the community that follows it.
All this is clearly visible from the stories about life of past prophets and their ummahs and more so in case of our prophet. It is unfortunate that we were made fools by our kings and mullahs and we remain fools to this day at mercy of politicians, mullahs and capitalists or bankers or money lenders or changers.
We have been programmed by way of indoctrination to think islam is just a few baseless rituals that in actual fact benefit none. The quran emphasises repeatedly decide your course of actions by keeping your eye on the end results of your actions. If the result of your actions is more and more divergence from the God set goal of islam then obviously you are going the wrong way ie whast you think islam is and follow it is not islam and you are following something wrong as islam.
Today muslims have become deaf, dumb and blind ie not know where they need to go and do not observe where they are going so no steps are taken for correction. The result is we have not just lost respect as human beings in the whole wide world but even among ourselves. Time to ask ourselves, is there worse still to come for us before we see sense?
Allah is not looking for slaah and zakaah the way we understand and do them and are happy with that instead Allah is looking for proper understanding of his deen and its full implementation with our full commitment. I do not see that coming any time soon because our knowledge about islam makes that quite obvious. Even if we change our direction today it will take at least a couple of decades to raise a generation that is 100% muslims both in word and deed.
We are just talkers and even that without much sense. May Allah help us realise our faults and mend them so that we could understand his program and implement it. It really makes me sad to see loads of baby minded issues being discussed among muslims I wonder when we will grow up to be at level of awareness at international level with definite vision so that we could play our part effectively in all fields of life in light of the quran and islam.

Frankly speaking, I don't blame any Mullah, Aalim and Scholar etc., what they brought forward to us b'coz whatever they brought, it is due to their best ability whereas we are failed to do so means never bothered to bring something that benefit other muslims including other pplz except criticize.
What I find good I take it and what I don't find good I leave it.

Fine dear lethal kamikaze but mullahs are those people who do not let you take what is good and leave alone what is bad in your view ie your viewpoint means nothing to mullahs and that is why they are called mullahs.
You are taking ulema as mullahs, ulema are those people who try to learn themselves and help others learn and that is all they are interested in. They simply convince themselves and others and are ready to be convinced. They are hungry for knowledge and learning sense.
