When/how did Islam first enter the area that is today k/a Kashmir ? i’ve read that demographic changes started around the 7th/8th? century, around which time it was originally predominantly made up of Hindus and Buddhists. In a 1911 British census (the only first official census undertaken), it was concluded that the area was “94%” Muslim. Was it Sufis who encouraged the spread of Islam in this area ? How did that happen? There was never a Muslim ruler in Kashmir, was there so was it people turning to Islam, choosing it for themselves, or was reverting to Islam forced upon the people by anyone at any period in time? Just curious.
Kashmir has had muslim rulers and affliates with sultanates since the 7th century....part through force, part through sufism...
