Cousin marriages are proved by Medical researchers that they increase the risk of diseases.I may add that it is one of the factors but not the only factor.Since islam allows cousin marriages there should be a ruling on thatone by the ullemas.We muslims believe that there are four fundamental sources of law in islam in Islam Quran,sunnah,Qiyas(analogy) and Ijma(consensus).It is upto the ullema to act on this issue.
Since there is no concept of caste or biradari system in islam and cousins in the society are married solely on the basis of caste or biadari then this practice should be discorage by the muslim society itself.I agree with you that basic idea of marriage in islam is to have a family and as you rightly said “there is a very open emphasis on “Get those married who are single” not on “getting married to preferably the cousins” which to me is enough to believe that getting married is important and for that it is not important to look up in cousins necessarily”
For every medical study that shows the cousin marriages increase chances of disease in the offspring, there is an opposit theory that debunks that research so dont try to convince us in general with that argument…bring a socio or economic issue and it will be more compelling
