Islam can't be the last religion if it's not the name of a religion, but just one of the concepts mentioned in the quran.
I believe that "islam" and "muslim" are common nouns and have meaning. There meaning has to do with peace (same root as salam). Islam, to me, is a state of peacefulness, and muslim is a person who has attained that state. The prefix "mu" is the same as muhammad (one who has attained greatness) and mumin (one who has faith).
Peace in the quran has to do with not having emotions. Usually people are pushed around by their emotions and they do things and believe in things just because they feel like it. When we are at peace we can ignore our emotions and finally see the truth and make the right decisions.
