'Islam and education' for a non muslims audience

i need help in preparing a presentation on the role of education in Islam. Stuff that mainstream teachers should know and can use - i have some ideas already but for diverse views i figured gupshup would b a good place to start.

any advice is greatly appreciated,

what age group is your audience?

Re: 'Islam and education' for a non muslims audience

the audience is adults - teachers and advisers

Why not you share some of your ideas then perhaps everybody can help to zest it up.

^ Sounds good. That way we'd know the type of material you're looking for.

Re: 'Islam and education' for a non muslims audience

ok - i thought about starting with the very first words revealed. I.e. Iqra - offering the translation and explaining that the Quran challeneges us to reason, to question and Islam works on the premise that the more we find out about the God's creation the closer it will bring us to Him.
I then thought about putting some hadith in that deal directly with seeking knowledge etc.
I also figured on putting some hadith in on the role of a teacher. So i am searching for hadees (with references) to put in the presentation.

Re: ‘Islam and education’ for a non muslims audience

*Here’s what was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (SAW) for the first time: *

In the Name of Allâh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

[096:001] Read! In the Name of your Lord Who has created (all that exists).

[096:002] He has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood).

[096:003] Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous.

[096:004] Who has taught (the writing) by the pen.

[096:005] He has taught man that which he knew not.

In Ibn Kathir’s tafsir, the first portion briefly outlines the actual event of how the revelation took place and the events following it shortly after. For details, please visit: The Beginning of the Prophethood of Muhammad and the First of the Qur’an revealed

In addition, there is an article that I posted here a while ago that propagates Muslims seeking knowledge and I believe it makes references to Quran and Sunnah. Here’s the link: Islam and the Pursuit of Worldly Knowledge

I personally feel that you shouldn't touch hadiths so soon. Maybe

  1. Talk about Allah(s.w.t.), who is He?
  2. Talk about Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), name a few other prophets.
  3. Talk about Quran, quote a few of them, I personally loved Chapter 55 verse 19-21 Ar-Rahman, (He has let free the two bodies of flowing water, meeting together: Between them is a Barrier which they do not transgress: Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
  4. Wonders of Allah's creation examples: Who taught the wolf, when it sleeps, to sleep with one eye open? So it sleeps with one eye open, until that eye becomes drowsy, then it opens the sleeping eye. (source: Belief in Allah by 'Umar S. al-Ashqar

I feel that for non-muslims, what you say must be logical, scientific proven and that Islam is peaceful.

If you need anything material, tell me, I might be able to find a few good ones for you.
