ISLAM AND ASTROLOGY: Plz Read!

Hi,

I’m a Muslim, not a strong one or very religious, but I enjoy the ceremonies ala Eid or something. However, recently I have felt a real pull towards studying Astrology and have read about it on the net ect.

Usually I’d just dismiss these things, I am nor really superstitious-but the information they give is so accurate for myself. This is part of one reading I had done recently:

I have produced for you ***** as a native of the sign Taurus.
I would like to inform you about the position of the planet
Venus at the moment of your birth as well as that of the Moon which will be very important for you during this summer ***** and most particularly concerning
meeting your ideal partner as I have some very good news to announce to you
***** about this subject (Venus’ position at the moment of your birth was
15°12’11.2290 and the Moon’s was 347°44’35.8765). I would also like to tell you
that I am convinced about what I am about to tell you as I have been able to
check it all very thoroughly and this does appear very clearly in your astral
configuration. I would also like to say that in astrology coincidence does not
exist which means that I do not think that it is purely
due to chance that you went to my reading.

And the “planets” and “luck” thing really did fall correctly. I mean I was told “Saturn brought me bad luck”, and my grades last year were below my own (pretty high) standard. Recently, they have picked up as she suggested they would.

Point is this:

Is believing astrology haram?

What if its a pro-not a BS “horoscope” colomn.

Can you take this AND Islam together-without contradiction?

Is this Hinduism (I know this was the faith of some of our forefathers before Islam S Asia. )

***** = my name. I’m not comfortable with this getting out.

Astrology is a definite science and definite sciences are never disallowed in Islam. There is nothing for or against it in the Koran.

Muslims excelled in these sciences before downfall.

Thanks.

angelo_dundee if you really want to know what Islam says about it, then gupshup is not the right place to find out because you get all sorts of people giving religious rulings over here, some are non-Muslims with Islamic/Urdu nicknames who's only purpose in life is to destroy Islam from within (like termites) by encouraging what God has forbidden and mocking what God has ordered.

I would recommend you ask a knowledgeable scholar and if there's none in your area, there's some fatwa sites I can recommend, pm me if u want the links.

:)

Astrology is no science... it is just a load of hokey cokey rubbish.
Astrology is believeing that planets, stars, comets iand other celestial bodies influence your life

You're getting confused with astronomy, which is a definite science.
Astronomy is the impartial study of planets, stars, comets and other celestial bodies to gain a better understanding of the universe at large.

If you actually believe that astrology is a science, you are truly ignorant. Astrology is just a load of utter BS.

I was about to say the samething....

^

I know that Astrology is the science of influence of the heavenly bodies on human affairs and terrestrial affairs by their positions and aspects. I also know the difference between Astrology and Astronomy. I insist that Astrology is a definite science.

This science had been practiced by prominent Muslim scientists some of whom excelled at. Earlier, the egyptians were the only source of knowledge of Astrology for Muslims, but later on, Alberuni learnt the science from the Indians when he came to India. Ibne Sina & Khwarzimi were two of the most renouned astrologers among the Muslims scholars.

The fact that you do not know the rules of Astrology does not mean that is is 'hokey cokey rubbsish'. People spend their lives studying this science. You have also called me 'truely ignorant' for believing that Astrology is a science. I can conveniently send the words back your way, for the fact that you do not know anything about Astrology at all.

Since you probably relate your views about astrology to the religion of the Molvi, & since this thread deals with the status of Astrology in Islam, let me clarify this only in religious context.

1- If, for the sake of avoiding the longer argument, we accept that it is hokey cokey rubbish, then it leaves no way for you to say it is not allowed in Islam. Entertainment is not diallowed in Islam.

2- It says in the Koran, "And he hath constrained the night and the day and the sun and Moon to be services unto you, and the stars are made subservient by His command. Lo! herein indeed are portents for people who sense." (16:12) Is this hokey cokey rubbish too?

One of the ﺏﺎﺤﺘﺴﻣ in Islam is Fasting on ﺾﻴﺑ ﻡﺎﻳﺍ which is also a Sunnah of the Prophet. The only reason for this is that the Prophet believed in the effect of lunar motion on human affairs. the wearing of a stone as a remedy to the effect of harmful effects of planetory motion is supported by the Sunnah of the Prophet who used to where the stone of Aqiq in his ring.

The point here is, that if you either do not know, or do not believe in a science, you have a right to your opinion, but your lack of knowledge on the justification of the science of Astrology does not give you a license to call it hokey pokey rubbish and refuse to accept it as a science.

is it true islam believes in pre-destination that is your life is already decided for you. how do you explain fate and luck in islam?

Pre-destination in Islam is a seperate, very very long debate. It started off in around 80 Hijri when politically motivated cruelties and bloodshed were justified by the government by pre-destination.
There's a lot you'd have to read up to get the whole scenario.
