Islam: A threat to Science

Officially, the most ridiculous anti-Islam video I have ever seen on youtube.

WTH?!

Re: Islam: A threat to Science

so much knowledge and I wish he had learned some of it. a bit of history to be precise. the era most Christian refer to as the dark ages. he would have discovered the very basics of science, scientific instruments and research methods were invented/developed by Muslims.

Watch the video carefully. He clearly and repeatedly says "Islam as practiced today since the last 800 years" . The Dark Ages were before that time.

I am not sure if the video itself is Unislamic or not. He gives some facts to support his conclusion that "Islam as practiced today" is against science. Correct response will be to prove that the facts given by him are wrong, rather than scream Islamophobia.

Re: Islam: A threat to Science

Indeed rather than criticizing any particular religion I would say all religious dogma discourages independent thought and scientific inquiry. The reason why the Christian and Jewish societies have been so successful in Science is because they have a large number of atheists and agnostics who are willing to question every aspect of life.

Re: Islam: A threat to Science

"Muslim Countries: A threat to Science" That's what the title should have been.

Cut the crap about atheists and agnostics in Christian and Jewish societies already. The West has been successful in Science because Scientists are valued in those societies, they are appreciated. Where in "Muslim countries" no one gives a crap. Look at how they treated the only Muslim Scientist who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in his home country. LOL Look at how Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan is treated in his country.

No one gives a crap in your so called Muslim Countries.

Can one have a civil argument without useless bickering :)

The respect for science in the Christian/Jewish societies didn't grow overnight. During the Middle Ages many scientists like Galileo had the courage to question the dogma peddled by the Bible. Initially they suffered, but in due course of time their theories were accepted and the respect for science grew. It will be interesting to note how many scientists have emerged from the Bible belt in US where theories of Creationism rather than Darwinism hold more sway .

OTOH in the present day Muslim societies, one sees that those who question established religious views often face social boycott and are ostracized. Consequently one never develops the questioning spirit that is the most essential requirement for scientific inquiry. Thus Muslims are excellent technicians ( AQ Khan) but not known for scientific innovations.

Re: Islam: A threat to Science

What does religion have anything to do with science? Religion teaches us how to live our lives NOT how to do scientific research! Though there is a huge emphasis on education in Islam so you could say Islam does encourage learning, it does encourage us to "seek knowledge" i.e. research, right?

Even the muslim countries who are not doing as much research as they could, its just because they neglect it, NOT because they want to wipe out science for goodness sake!

But for a scientist, research is the way of life !

Right but only the approved kind, the knowledge that pushes the religious boundaries is strictly no go territory. Why should a person who already believes that God created the universe with complete certainty, research theories of Universal Creation ? He already has all the answers, right ?

Scientific research doesn't imply reading up laws from some text book. Rather it means constantly pushing the boundaries of accepted wisdom. This is only possible if one approaches each idea with a totally open mind, unhampered by religious dogma and orthodoxy.

Re: Islam: A threat to Science

This is not to boast, but I'm a practising muslim, a scientist and I will be starting a research project next month... So why should I let anyone convince me that Islam (or any other religion) is going to stop me from doing research?

I don't remember reading in the Quran about a " no go territory".... Labelling Islam a threat to science is just ridiculous, it just goes to show how desperate people are these days....

Good for you ! I am sure that you will countribute towards increasing the number of patents held by Muslim scientists ( if the figures in the vid are true) . If you read my posts carefully you will notice that I clearly state that religious dogma, orthodoxy are the reasons that effect scientific pursuit negatively, not religion itself.

Umm .. there are lots of restrictions and taboos in every religion. But let's not go there lest this thread turns controversial. :)
