Isis's slaughter of the Yazidi is a new Rwanda happening before our eyes

You know, I’ve also thought about this. While I don’t support dictators, I’m not sure if American style democracy is the best form of government for every country and population.

A couple of days ago when talking with my husband about the current squabbling in Afghanistan over the results of the presidential election, he said something which I found rather unsavoury. He stated that he believes that the reason American style “democracy” has failed and will continue to fail in places like Iraq and Afghanistan is that American style governments only function in countries with fairly homogenous and united populations. The aforementioned places have extremely diverse populations where the divisions run quite deeply. In addition to that, a government installed by an occupying force will never have legitimacy. It will always be viewed as a puppet government by the local populace and continue to be a source of conflict. As unpalatable as it is, I’m beginning to think that he may be right.
