ISIS recruiting Indian muslims to fight in Iraq and Syria

In recent times terrorist organizations have started attracting Indian Muslims. Indian muslims have so far stayed away from militancy but that might not be the case in the future.

How and what the Indian government can do to check this trend?

ISIS recruiting Indian Muslim youths to fight in Iraq, Syria? | Zee News

New Delhi: In what could be a warning bell for the security agencies in India, reports have emerged that the dreaded Islamic State for Iraq and Syria** (ISIS) group have been recruiting youths from states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra and Jammu and Kashmir to fight in Iraq, Syria and other places in the Middle East.
**
As per reports, over hundred youths may have joined the jihadist militant group as of now and the terror group Indian Mujahideen may be involved in recruiting men from India.

The NIA has been apparently told to prepare a dossier as to who may involved in recruiting youths from India.
It has also been said that the ISIS is particularly targeting Muslim youths.

The ISIS is also known as ISIL, with the L standing for the Levant. Now it is called Islamic State or IS. It is a jihadi group that has established its rule by force in a vast areas of northern Iraq, plus parts of Syria.

**One of the tools used for recruitment are online videos which are being used to radicalise poor from a particular community.
**
A propaganda video did surface on the internet a few weeks back which showed a young male, supposedly recruited from Canada, sharing his experience of being a street janitor in Canada and then what happens after he moved to Syria to fight for IS.

The video showed him asking people to help them in any way they could. He was also seen glorifying jihad. In the end the video shows him getting killed in a fight.

The video is reported to have been translated into Tamil, Urdu and also has Hindi subtitles.

Al Isabah Media Production has claimed to have posted the videos. It claims to be the media unit of ‘Ansar ut Tawheed Fi Bilad Al Hind’ or supporters of Monotheism in the land of India, on its Twitter account.

**Earlier too, the video of ISIS leader Abu Bakar Al Baghdadi had been translated into Hindi. He too had called on Muslims from India to come and fight for the cause and had claimed that the rights of Muslims in India had been forcibly seized.
**
Earlier, four youths had disappeared from Maharashtra from Thane district in May this year. They were in their 20s and hailed from Kalyan. It had been speculated that they had joined the IS to fight in Iraq, even though their families had denied the report.

Later Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria had issued a circular asking Anti-Terror Cells (ATCs) of all police stations in the city to remain alert and keep a tab in their areas.

The circular has asked ATCs to probe the trail of youths who had gone missing and had asked them to check their links to terrorist organisations if any.

Re: ISIS recruiting Indian muslims to fight in Iraq and Syria

unless they are talking about outsourcing their call centers, i think ISIS, or more likely Zee tv, is delusional.

Re: ISIS recruiting Indian muslims to fight in Iraq and Syria

as i understand, the government will come very hard [and it must] on the terrorists and i also don't believe that Indian Muslims will heed to the recruitment drive by the IS.

the only problem i see is when the security agencies start arresting and torturing innocent Muslims. i believe the Indian Muslims will NOT respond to their call for jihaad simply because it's NOT jihaad, it's purely terrorism.

Re: ISIS recruiting Indian muslims to fight in Iraq and Syria

even if it were jihad, i cant imagine any poor indian spending valuable time and money to fly to the middle east to become a mercenary soldier, leaving a family behind etc. fighting, guns and all that false machismo isnt glorified in most of india the way it is in some other countries.

Re: ISIS recruiting Indian muslims to fight in Iraq and Syria

^ Indian intelligence reports. Anyways, lets see. I dont think Indian Muslims will remain indifferent to the social transformation taking place in Middle east and South/Central Asia.

Re: ISIS recruiting Indian muslims to fight in Iraq and Syria

^ true. i remember there was a boy in Allahabad in predominantly Muslim area who disappeared. his whereabouts were NOT know for full 6 months. one day, to the amazement of the parents he returned and he told everyone how he was led astray by those so called Mullas to become a jihadist. he said he ran away after 6 months because he didn't find it to be a true jihaad.

kudos to this boy!

Re: ISIS recruiting Indian muslims to fight in Iraq and Syria

i think if the government's security agencies walk a FINE line between arresting real terrorists wannabees and the false arrests of innocent people, Muslims will support to keep India FREE of jihaadists.

Re: ISIS recruiting Indian muslims to fight in Iraq and Syria

The jihadists have an appeal to the youth. The feeling of being powerful is very intoxicating. I have seen all of this during my college life. The threat is real, Indian government can take it as they wish.

The ISIS Siren Call to India’s Muslims - WSJ

Consider the evidence. At least four Indian Muslims have reportedly signed up to fight with ISIS in Iraq. Last week, one of them, a 22-year-old engineering student named Arif Majeed, was reported killed, possibly in a U.S. airstrike. He left behind a letter to his family in which he explained his reasons for traveling from his home outside Mumbai to Iraq: “It is a blessed journey for me, because I don’t want to live in this sinful country.”
Meanwhile, police in the southern state of Tamil Nadu arrested a Muslim cleric after a group photo of young Muslim men posing outside a mosque in ISIS T-shirts began to circulate on social media.
These may be isolated incidents, and the vast majority of Indian Muslims shows no signs of being attracted to any jihadist group. But ISIS has arguably made a bigger splash in India in three months than al Qaeda could manage in the 26 years since it was founded in Pakistan by Osama bin Laden.
ISIS enjoys many advantages that so-called core al Qaeda, the parts of the network based in Pakistan and Afghanistan, lacks. First, in terms of the kind of symbolism that fires up jihadists, it’s hard to beat the re-establishment, at least notionally, of a caliphate uniting all believing Sunni Muslims. ISIS controls an estimated 35,000 square miles of territory, about the size of Jordan. The group has effectively erased the border between Iraq and Syria created by an agreement between Britain and France in 1916.

so true.

Re: ISIS recruiting Indian muslims to fight in Iraq and Syria

I wonder if Modi Sarkar could be serving as catalyst. Sure hope not.

Re: ISIS recruiting Indian muslims to fight in Iraq and Syria

i've studied at India's ONLY Muslim University and lemme tell you there is NO such trend among Muslim youths there. i still visit AligaRh regularly and one of my brother teaches there. as Queer said, the jihadists are NOT glorified in India and they have much more to look forward to. Indian Muslims KNOW full well that if they become jihaadists, the security agencies will come very hard on them as well as on their families. i've never heard any speech from the pulpit by any imam inciting violence or glorifying martyrdom for the so called jihaads. i do NOT consider ANY current strife involving Muslims to be a genuine jihaad. they are NOT for the sake of Allah...they are for the sake of power, land and establishment of 'POLITICAL' Islam. we, as Muslims in India, are NOT at all interested in such jihaads.

Re: ISIS recruiting Indian muslims to fight in Iraq and Syria

modi ji's sarkar and such reports together could mean troubled times ahead for muslims.

still dont see how the poor can be recruited via internet videos in india. poor people dont have internet. nor do they get visas to fly out even to stable countries, forget iraq. nor can they afford money for plane tickets. and the ones who get these would jump ship and open tea stalls in dubai or oman.

Re: ISIS recruiting Indian muslims to fight in Iraq and Syria

Malayalis have monopoly on tea stalls from the Arctic to Antarctic. What about the poor Tamilians and Biharis?

Re: ISIS recruiting Indian muslims to fight in Iraq and Syria

Well at least Indian Muslims have a new group to blame for whatever suspicion and distrust Non-Muslim Indians may harbor for them, besides Pakistan. But given the opportunity, im sure the right wing in India will still claim ISIS is funded by the ISI....
