My grandmother did something called an Ishtikhara.
From what I understand, this is a special prayer in which you ask Allah whether the thing you are about to do is the right decision and Allah lets you know.
Personally, I have never heard of this, only when I go to Pakistan do I see people doing this.

So is this thing legit or what ?
Peace mercenary2k
Yep it's legit. It's one of the 'forgotten prayers' alongside salat-ut-'tasbih and others.
People in the age of intellegence and information have left such practices because they believe they are needless of the guidance of Allah in their big decisions.
The correct method of istikhara is that one seeks the advice of a knowledgeable person, makes a decision based on sound evidence, but then ties within this decision the dua, that Allah (SWT) take it away from oneself if it is not benefitting and to bring it closer if it does.
The majority of times there will be a noticeable sequence of events that will suggest that Allah (SWT) is making it difficult or easy to come true. Otherwise if it is a very strong 'no' then in the form of a very clear dream this may be experienced.
In either case the advice that becomes prevalent be it gradually over time or instantly emphatic through a dream the conclusion must be obeyed. If the decision is a sound one and in accordance to the Will of Allah (SWT), then nothing much will be detected except perhaps an easy ride to it's realisation.
There is a set prayer for this usually at night before going to bed. By the way it is istikhara not isHtikhara
Some people also say that there is this colour interpretation method in dreams, but I am sceptical about this idea, because I have not found a suitable reference for it.
