I just loved Ishtiaq Ahmed's novels (Inspector jamshed series). I probably read 90% of those and finished my school library collection. I was just in love with those novels and always wanted to become a detective :D
I loved them as well. Khaas Numbers were great but usually late. Mahmood, Farooq, Farzana never grew up, though. I had a collection of them up to very recently. They got lost while shifting...
I remember there was one super criminal named ray-rata. He was like the Dash of the Incredibles family. He could run very fast.
Ishtiaq Ahmed's grasp of Urdu language is excellent. And he also possesses the ability to weave an intricate plot without tipping the reader off.
However, for all his qualities, there is only so much vitriol you can digest. His constant propegenda against all-things-not-muslim really grates at you after a while.
His best villian IMO was 'Slater'. Though my favorite book of his is 'Surkh Teer Ki Wadi.' (the last 150 odd books are pretty much crap filled with incessant vitriol against Qadianies/Christians, not to mention poor characterization and wimpy villians)
I used to love reading his books while growing up. I would read all 4 books each month, 2 of Ins Jamshed and of Ins Kamran and the Shoki series. I loved Ibn-e-safi novels too but Ishtiaq Ahmed were better at first but then I hooked up to Imran series and gave up on Ishtiaq Ahmed.
the very first flavour i had of detective stories in urdu was at the hands of ibn e safi. and after that ishtiaq ahmed was a dreadful nusiance. the entire family is jasoosing! if your parents are anything like me they restricted you because it makes their hearts bleed seeing their young un indulging in such an intelligence horror.
wow, talk about a trip down the memory lane! I also loved reading these novels, Ins. Jamshed and Ins Kamran Mirza. The think novels in which both the temas got united and soloved mysterirs were the best. The last time I read the novels were probably in laste 80's. I rember that at that time the autor has taken a stand against 'Qaadyanis' and one of his novel was said to be inspired by the town of 'Rabwa' (sp?)
I remember reading few novels loooong back - the only thing I remember is the flying kicks of farzana and the whole universe depending upon the inspector Jamshed thingy!

^^ Bhai jaan he was writing for readers between age of 10-15 years old......How much reasearch do one need to do to write for such readers..
yeah, when i was 15 i thought his novels were absolute crap...but i am not denying that at 11-12, i used to love'em too...
oh yeah, then the novel 'khoon ki holi' was very well positioned right, the entire premise being that some hindus kidnap muslim kids and atatch them to some machine which pokes the kids in the hearrt and spray their blood all over a room where the hindus then play holi with it?
nice frikkin concept for a novel, and then we wonder why we have psychos in our society
