Can you guys imagine how difficult my roza’s are I come here to the HH forum and bus .. all the food talk ..
Anyways , Yesterday I was browsing through the net to look for isabgol and acidity connection and found some really helpful info , want to share with you :
Most of the people do not get sufficient amount of fiber form the daily diet. As a result more than 75% of the population are overweight and have problems related to indigestion, gastritis, high cholesterol levels and some times may also be the cause for colon cancer.
The fiber present in Isabgol is soluble in nature unlike wheat bran and cellulose, which are insoluble.
This Fibre helps control the blood cholesterol levels. Isabgol forms a thin layer on the intestines and prevents the absorption of cholesterol in to the arteries. Thus the cholesterol levels in the body is maintained.
It helps to prevent heart attacks by regulating the serum cholesterol. It also helps to regulate the blood glucose levels and insulin response by decreasing the absorption of fats and glucose.
It helps to clean the gastro intestinal tract by removing the toxins present there along with the bulk.
It also helps to prevent indigestion, and flatulence.
Isabgol helps to prevent lethargy and gives a feeling of well being and good health.
My Recommendation :
Have a tsp full mixed in water sehri time. Eat your sehri food 20-30 minutes later , so that the Isabgol can prepare your stomach for digestion.
Then again at Iftar time, mix a tsp in your drink and enjoy it. The oils from all the fried food will get less absorbed in your body plus , it kills the acidity from fasting all day long
I have tried this and ended up gagging :(...just can't take this in any shape or form.Have mixed it with liquids and yoghurts, but it keeps sticking in my throat.
Charmed … I know what the problem is .. once you hae mixed it in liquid /yoghurt , it starts expanding.. so you need to really gulp it down quick before it starts increasing in volume.
What i do is , take quarter of a cup of water and add a tsp of isabgol in it and thn gulp it down asap … and yeah no complaints so far … try it …
Yep, is available in most desi stores. If you can't find it, try Fybogel instead. You can get this at most UK supermarkets and Boots / chemists etc.... it's basically isabgol but has a flavour with it too - the orange ones are actually quite nice!!
Maroush , its even available at holland and barrats and in Boots with its original name Isabgol husk..
I bought it from desi store though , coz , in English stores , they sell it expensive and in tiny amounts while desi store will sell it in large dabba's and minimal cost ...
I have been having isabgol since 7 days now and mashallah the difference is great ... it also rids the stomach and intestines of toxins ...
To make it easier to drink , fill less then quarter glass of milk /water/juice ... mix one tsp and then immediately gulp it down ... once it expands , it becomes sticky and hard to gulp down...
^as its imported from the sub continent its most likely going to be called isbagol/isabgol, i also saw it somewhere where it had Psyllium seed husks on it if u see the packaging of it it will actually say the english name too :D
charmed … stops laughing and pulls a serious face ..
Ok, so yeah , you got to wait at sehri time , coz you are hungry through the night and you want the isbagol to reduce the acids created in your tummy , before you eat sehri. I have it as soon as i wake up and then start making sehri ..15-20 minutes later me and hubby get busy with eating sehri
Iftar time , is the same issue, you have been hungry since morning and ideally should wait for few minutes so isbagol settles in your tummy and reduces acids … but … the purpose of having it at iftar is different from having it at sehri … The purpose this time is for the isbagol to aid digestion and reduce oil absorption from the food we will gulp in large amounts .. I cant wait for 20 minutes iftar time , so I just gulp it , and then attack on the food
By the way , i did some more research on it and a teaspoon full of it , once a day is a healthy intake of isbagol … so dont push yourself to having it twice if you are finding it difficult.
Ispghol, as it is called in, Pakistan is a laxative , so watch out when you consume it in any way. It has many benefits but
There are some other side effect too so watch out for these. Psyllium has generally been well tolerated in studies. Some people may experience stomach discomfort, gas, bloating, diarrhea or constipation. Blockage of the gastrointestinal tract may occur, particularly if psyllium is used without enough water or is used by people with prior bowel surgery, motility disorders or bowel tumors. Other side effects such as rash, cold symptoms or difficulty breathing may be caused by psyllium allergies. A rare side effect may involve an increase in the number of some kinds of blood cells, a reaction usually associated with allergies.
Psyllium has been studied for up to six months, and safety beyond this amount of time is not known.
Read the red and bold letters, if you are not seeing those side effects you are OK . Also discontinue using it after six months for a couple of month and the start again. No doubt it has many advantages. The world is going back to basics and toward nature.
Yeah , I see what you mean ... Also I would like to add tha please dont make the use of Isabgol hibitual ... In Ramadan individuals are encouraged to have it , to regulate digestion ... but at the end of the day , it is a form of laxative too .. Keeping that in mind ... have it occasionally with a break in between , so that you can benefit from the good aspects of the fibre while cutting down the risk factor.
no charmed , i havnt felt bloated at all ..infact , due to roza’s I was starting to experience acidity ( indigestion, some bloating ) .. but having isabgol , really really helped my situation and I feel alot more calm these days …
Why dont you have once a day for a few days .. and see how your body reacts .. and then if everything is fine , jsut use it every alternate day ?
Waise , in pakistan, its a household common .. they have it for everything !so it doesnt really have risk factors associated to it ..
So try it out .. and also if you can find out from your SIL , how she is using it and how many times a day … I would be quite interested to know .. time to lose some weight
