Is working in banks halal?

Lets say you are an accountant in a bank then? Are you earnning halal?

Re: Is working in banks halal?

Ask a mufti

Re: Is working in banks halal?

Different muftis have different opinions.

Re: Is working in banks halal?

They can give you the reasons from Islamic point of view for their opinions. None of us are mufti’s here.

Re: Is working in banks halal?

So I once had a discussion with some Imam about this. And he was very clear about it that there is nothing wrong about working in bank. And then there were some other muftis who are with the opinion that if you cant find another suitable job, you can work in bank.

But then there is an extreme version obviously who say that working in banks is strictly forbidden.

I would rather stick with the middle route which seems to be the more moderate one, just as the way our religion is. If one doesnt have a better job, no harm in a bank job.

Re: Is working in banks halal?

I’ve never considered working for a bank directly. In fact I once turned down a very attractive job offer, because it would have meant joining a financial institution. Got something even better a few weeks later, Alhamdulillah. I honestly don’t know whether it would be Halal to work in a bank, but I would feel a bit uneasy about it. However I work for a Consulting company and do projects for customers from a wide variety of industries. And that includes banks.

Re: Is working in banks halal?

A bank is taking money from customers and investing in projects and generating a win, which in return it gives back to their customers… what is haram in it… even islamic banking is not 100% clear coz its the same logic in different name…

I personaly would work in a bank as rather to not to work and take social money from the government/tax payers…

My company is daugher IT company to bank .. I never thought that I am doing something not islamic.

Re: Is working in banks halal?

Amen!! banks create industries, manufacturing and all the progress and lots of wealth that runs the economic engine. Without banks there would be massive unemployment, poverty, hunger, famine etc so rather than being a source of evil they can be a source of good. This is not the kind of usury that was referenced in religion where it was meant to exploit people in need.

Re: Is working in banks halal?

**Lets say, If u go to a restaurant, u order some chicken/meat dish, before having it u think may b its not halal or may b u r not confirm of it, so its now doubtful to eat, would u eat it??
****I know u wont, n it would b better to avoid such food
**
You should ask Aalim or mufti, but before that, ask yourself
If u hv doubts, n dil manta nae hai k ye halal hai k haram, tou iska mtlb yehi hai k kch ghalat hai, aur jis mein haram halal ka doubt ho, tou aesi situation mein chorr dena behter hota hai…

Re: Is working in banks halal?

I have been down this road - Asking same / similar Qs - back in my young days. But first …

About Me:

I am educated, technical person. I have read finance / investment books. Read the history, know in-depth to fair degree most of the investment options out there. I don’t work in Banking / Accounting fields. I have done investment of different sorts as well, so I have practical experience.

Long Answer:

Humans are complicated animals and we need complex system(s) to interact with. Simple rules of HALAL / HARAM (in investing) force us to say that everything is Black or White, yet life is different shades of greys. I like the idea - intellectuals came up with that are servicing Muslim communities : You have to determine what it means to you. This goes along with the philosophy of how you perceive Islam and the world around you.
1.PRACTICALITY: For me personally, practicality trumps any philosophical idea we may have in our head (may it be in regards to Islam). For example, lets say in cold environment like Canada - you enforce the idea that we should dress like Muslim cultures (to show solidarity and promote religions etc). This will not work because most Muslim areas are from hot, and its not practical to do that.
2.WORLD VIEW: You have to see how you look at the world. Meaning, Reading about history of BONDS. They were loans from king, and people start buying and selling them later in life. Eventually corporations adopted similar model but changed it. Loans are not haram, buying and selling straight loans is not haram. Corporation adopted them, and their price + profit fluctuates based on TIME & HOW SAFE THEY ARE. If you dissect it, BONDS should be ok to invest, yet I am sure most people don’t know what they are (and how they work). Movli / Mufti’s are usually less aware of the inner working of these. Similar issues with Insurance, organ donation etc. Most people don’t understand what is going on, and its easier to classify it as Haram and be done with it. Taking a stance that it is ok, requires courage, education and spreading awareness.
3.WHY ISLAM CAME: Why did Islam came? Is it a command from God and you have follow it blindly, no matter how unpractical, or inconvenient it is? Personally, I think Islam indicates that it came to make the life better for people. Its set of guidelines that help you in this world AND after world. Everything in Islam should be logical, understandable to be followed - otherwise it shouldn’t! (There is Quran Ayat says that in Surah 2, can’t find ref at this point).

SHORT ANSWER:

You will have to determine for yourself what constitute as halal. Ask references / sources from everyone but you have to find your own answers.

Re: Is working in banks halal?

holding a bank account when you consider working in the bank not halal is certainly haram.
