Is UN relevant?

Does UN have any role in the world, other than acting as a rubber stamp for few powerful nations of the world?

Re: Is UN relevant?

We need a platform for nations to get together at when the aliens attack us.

Re: Is UN relevant?

This is one of the points Putin made in his speechand he suggests that UN needs to be strengthened and its relevance re-established. For the last two decades, it basically has been a pawn for the powerful western nations.

Re: Is UN relevant?

No it's not relevant now

Re: Is UN relevant?

Well its always useful to have a forum where we can discuss things in a respectable manner in full view of everyone. Its relevant to that extent, even if its toothless otherwise.

Its ironic that people who so actively post comments to this forum and others dont see the relevance of the UN, where countries of the world can air their concerns in that common forum.

Re: Is UN relevant?

Its a pretty expensive platform to air "concerns", we have media and international press for that.

Re: Is UN relevant?

It is toothless and largely ceremonial in nature.

I can see how EU has managed to maintain lasting peace between and co-operation with European countries. In terms of authority, it seems like a far more efficient organisation.

But UN on the other hand is rubber stamp for a superpower and her allies.

Re: Is UN relevant?

You should thank US for that for roping in Europe into NATO. There is also the competition with america part, but frankly if US didn't babysit europe, you might see another hitler with germany and russia ganging up on poland or france doing their **** etc.

Re: Is UN relevant?

Okay this is where real and proper history comes in.

NATO was British foreign Minister Ernest Bevin's idea, and it was him who roped in America.

The accidental founder of EU is Winston Churchill. His ever so famous speech "United States of Europe" speech in Zurich.

There is a joke that 80% of world's current problems have their roots in British Empire, lol.

America did not "babysit" Europe out of some goodness, it needed regional influence and strong Western European allies against Soviet Union.

There are various historical view points that Russia would have minded its sphere of influence if it was not for American involvement in the continent. Britain was mainly responsible for exaggerating the Russian threat which largely did not exist.

Why do you say that?
