we get told that the Angels of Death constantly approach Allah and ask to take someones life…(Is this true or are these all scare stories)…anyway…We understand Allah to be all knowing etc…now does he fix our time of death at birth…ie he actually involves himself in choosing our time of death…or does he decide that we die when the angel of death approaches him…
ie is it a case of im born and Allah says 80…
or is it…hey hes 28…hes lived enough lets take it…
or on a completely different tangent is Allah all knowing about when we die but leaves us to control that…so allah knows im gonna jump off a cliff but he hasnt decided the time…
Have you ever seen the movie Meet Joe Black?
it could be like that, but then what about Gabrial, the angel of rath. But then agian how could death be fixed when the bible says man was given free will. If it was fixed then we would think we have a choice to jump off a cliff but realy that dicition is already determinde.

Dear questioner:
Al-Salâm `Alaykum wa Rahmah Allah wa Barakâtuh.
We know nothing of the Angel of Death petitioning Allah to take people’s lies. Those who are making such a claim about a matter of the Unseen are required to bring their evidence from the Qur’ân and authentic Sunnah to substantiate their claim.
Allah says: “Allah takes up the souls at the time of their death, and of those who die not during their sleep. He holds back those for whom he has decreed death and sends the others back for an appointed term. Verily in this are signs for those who reflect.” [Sûrah al-Zumar: 42]
Allah says the following about the angels at the time of a person’s death:
“Say: The angel of death, who has charge concerning you, will gather your souls, and afterward unto your Lord you will be returned.” [Sûrah al-Sajdah: 11]
“Those whom the angels cause to die while they are unjust to themselves then would they offer submission: ‘We used not to do any evil.’ Aye! Surely Allah knows what you did.” [Sûrah al-Nahl: 28]
“Those whom the angels cause to die (when they are) good. they say: ‘Peace be unto you! Enter the Garden because of what you used to do’.” [Sûrah al-Nahl: 32]
Based on the obvious meaning of these verses, the position of Ahl-al-Sunnah wa al-Jamâ`ah is that the Angel of Death is a single angel supported by other angels who assist him.

Thanks Sadiyah for getting my question checked out...im still not clear at what the answer means in reference to my questions...its probably me just not understanding so if you can help please do...
Naughty, the time of death as far as i know is written for each person. Everything a person is going to go through is written and that would include his death too i think.
Allah writes down the "term" (the period) everyone is going to spend in this life....
Quran 6:2
*He it is Who hath created you from clay, and hath decreed a term for you. A term is fixed with Him. Yet still ye doubt! *
and although sleep is compared to death, He says that the life is restored in the sleeping person, so He continues to live until his term (which has already been fixed) has been accomplished....
Quran 6:60 He it is Who gathereth you at night and knoweth that which ye commit by day. Then He raiseth you again to life therein, that the term appointed (for you) may be accomplished. And afterward unto Him is your return. Then He will proclaim unto you what ye used to do.
