Is this the greatest cricket series ever?

Re: Is this the greatest cricket series ever?

This series is probably one of the best because of its significance.

Many will think it as any series that comes and goes, but we're talking about the Ashes. The history, the players, the fact that its been with Australia for over a decade.

I'm sorry.. but this thread died the second Andrew Symonds name was mentioned.

Re: Is this the greatest cricket series ever?

This series was thrilling and interesting but is not the best. It can be best to English cricket fans.

I agree with fkhan2 here. This series was interetsing as every moment till the end of the match had something to deliver. Wickets, runs, lousy decissions…Test matches are not this interesting, usually.

Most importantly, till now almost every match has seen some players performing. I guess there will be a “good discussion” on who will be the “Man of the Series”.

Aus must have picked Symonds out of the way for this Ashes. He was at his very best, I will say, and he was willing to play Tests. Any ways, this is my opinion, and I am sorry if it has ruined this thread.

Re: Is this the greatest cricket series ever?

Since 2000, this has definitely been the best Test match series. I am pretty sure the ECB will sell a lot of DVD's in the coming months.

Re: Is this the greatest cricket series ever?

Aus rolled over India, Pakistan and New zealand with the same squad and this is the core that has carried them throughout the last decade. It was their best squad but too bad that it was foudn wanting against best bowling attack in the world.

Just because Symonds was not in it, it doesnt mean this series was not at its best. Look at the quality of cricket, intensity and incredible tensions involved and you will see what we meant by mentioning it as one of the best or the best.

Re: Is this the greatest cricket series ever?

If Symonds was able to thrash the best bowling attack, in ODIs so easily then their best squad must have been able to do so. Their best squad is tired, out of form, lack winning spirit and they were not able to win against BD without the greats of Symonds.

Re: Is this the greatest cricket series ever?

I dont argue that series btw pak-ind was exhillrating and memorable from a patriotic perspective but look at the quality of cricket in this current series.

Re: Is this the greatest cricket series ever?

What thrashing did Symonds give anyway? two scores of 70s in 8 matches? whoaa!

When you compared onedayers with tests, your argument died anyway.

p.s This thread is not about symonds, please keep it that way. All arguments regarding him will be trashed or seperated because this thread has been derailed already.

Re: Is this the greatest cricket series ever?

very good cricket. but not the best!
the way these goreh will have us imagine...theyd rate it high as the '66 world cup!!!

theres yet time for the gloss to come off this win, and i HOPE the aussies beat them in the last match and retain the ashes.
even though i hate the aussies aswell...theres no sweeter feeling than the feeling one gets when seeing england lose!

Re: Is this the greatest cricket series ever?

Geoffery Boycott, who has been playing cricket since before any of us were born [except one ;) ] believes this to be the Best Test Series ever. I agree with him.

The other memorable one for me is India's six test series against Pakistan in 1982-83 which Pakistan won by 3-0. Javed's 280*, Mudassar and Javed's partnership of 432 runs, Zaheer's series test average of 130 included 3 fine centuries, Mudassar's average of 126 included 4 centuries and overall three Pakistanis scored double tons. Not to forget Imran's devastating spell on a fine evening in Karachi where we saw the stumps of Gavaskar, Vishwanath, Amarnath, Patil, Kirmani, Vengsarkar and Kapil rattled. That series got me into cricket.

Re: Is this the greatest cricket series ever?

Memorable, may be. But pretty one-sided, if you ask me. India was on the receiving end almost through out. Prior to that series, Pakistan had completed a 3-0 brownwash of Australians at home, so they were in the swing of things, while India was struggling.

Re: Is this the greatest cricket series ever?

I don't know that it matters, its exciting, gripping, dramatic and everything you could want from a series, I'll let the historians judge how this fits in history, I can't judge because I don't watch crazy amounts of test cricket.

Re: Is this the greatest cricket series ever?

Never in the 129-year history of Test cricket can three consecutive matches have ended in such dramatic circumstances," **
***The Independent'*s Angus Fraser

Such statements prove that this has been one of the greatest test series ever.

Re: Is this the greatest cricket series ever?

I support you smooth guy. When ever I think that this guy is done with his theories he pops up with a new one. I salute you Professor Umer Shareef:Salute:

umer.ashraf's post daikhtey hee my right index finger presses down and the hand moves down in a smooth manner until I see day light...

Re: Is this the greatest cricket series ever?

Exactly. Angus Fraser is an honest writer though. I like his analysis.

Somehow I cant stop thinking that last test will be an easy victory for either team and wont be a nail biter like these three.

funguy, From a patriotic point of view that was a great series no doubt but like Faisal said it was pretty one sided.

I also think that Pakistan WI series in 1987 (in WI) was a pretty memorable too. Pakistan took a powerful bowling attack but it was in no way comparable to WI pace battery and Pakistan competed fire with fire. Too bad we dont have its highlights anywhere becaue it was not aired.

Re: Is this the greatest cricket series ever?

Could have been one of the greatest moments of our cricket history but thanks to poor umpiring in the last test, WI managed to level the series. Still remember listening to hasan jalil and omer qureshi on radio.

Re: Is this the greatest cricket series ever?

Wonder who that one could be? :stuck_out_tongue:

Re: Is this the greatest cricket series ever?

Yes that series was one sided, while this series was well-balanced between England and Weather.
