Muslims fume over proposed two-child norm

NEW DELHI, March 19 (UPI) – Indian Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishan Advani Thursday proposed a two-child norm for every family, sparking strong reaction from Muslims.
Speaking at an election meeting in southern India, Advani said: “A stable population … will make the allocation of finite resources of our country meaningful.”
India’s growing population is set to overtake China in year 2030. China limits couples to one child.
The deputy premier proposed anyone with more than two children should be barred from government jobs and holding public offices.
Muslims, who do not believe in contraception or family planning, fumed at the suggestion.
“Why has this suggestion been made now? It is an election stunt,” Zafaryab Jilani, a Muslim leader, said.
“Why was this issue not considered by the government for the six years it was in power?” Jilani asked Indo Asian News Service.
More than 82 percent of India’s 1 billion people are Hindu. The nation is also home to the second largest Muslim population in the world after Indonesia.
