is this lying on resume?

Is it considered lying on resume if you stretch your work experience by a month or two just to hide the unemployed months? eg if you worked at company ABC from January 2010 to October 2010 but you claim on the resume to have worked up till December 2010. What is usually the response of HR people when they see such cases? Do they discard the candidate immediately or is it something considered common practise and they accept such cases?

Re: is this lying on resume?

Usually, in USA, most of the employers verify your employment history by contacting your ex-employer. SO I would never lie about the length of my previous employment.

Plus, not having job for few months in between, is not a black mark on your resume, so dont worry.

Re: is this lying on resume?

^Tlk is right. Don't lie about your lenght of job coz when they verify your employment history..you may come out as dis-honest individual. If your resume has gaps in em..then explain them positively and most of the time they understand.

Re: is this lying on resume?

Thankyou for your response guys!

But if someone has lied on the resume by a couple of months, what do you think would be the HR response? Do they let it go or reject you straight away?

Re: is this lying on resume?

They may not reject right away but will inform you that they could not verify that many months of employment, and then burden of proof would be on you.

Re: is this lying on resume?

Don't show months on your resume. Instead of saying Dec 2001-Apr 2005, just mention 2001-2005. Thats pefectly acceptable.

Re: is this lying on resume?

Not in resume but once you are offered a job, you have to fill out employment verification form, and there, you have to put months.
