At least in the US they can never invalidate older notes. I think..

**at least in the US and Canada, unlike India/Pakistan, the bills are always a legal tender. when a bill is withdrawn, it means it's circulation has stopped. what they do is that when the banks receive those discontinued bills, they do NOT re-circulate...this way, these bills disappear from the scene in a few years...
...i've saved old Canadian $100, $20, $5, $2, $1 bills as souvenir. i also posses uncut sheets of $2 and $1 bills. :)**

these bills appreciate with time, specially sheets of uncut $1 and $2 bills which are no longer in print. it has already appreciated in value by 50% :) **
