Is this a virus?

[thumb=H]sc14883_2428679.JPG[/thumb]

This is a screenshot of my one partation. Unfortunatly it is of the partation which has all my data. One fine day all the folders and files were turned in to this…
I have Anti virus running and none of my others partations have any problems.
Is this a virus that is causing all this? or … what ?

Re: Is this a virus?

it could be a language pack that was installed mine did that sometime ago but it was a language thing so i changed it to english and everything was right again

Re: Is this a virus?

Thanks mansoor... but did not install any language pack. This particular partation had some problems ... the folder and file names were readable but had a funny character here and there. So i formated my system and reinstalled everything. Renamed the folders and files to their orignal. It worked for a few days and then one fine day ... this is what was there...

Re: Is this a virus?

It does not seem to be an issue with language pack because unavailabilty of a language pack will not change your file creation dates. Some of the dates are way out. Also multiple GB files in the root??? Did you have such huge files in the root directory of H Drive.

I would assume it to be your MFT corruption. Which OS you are using? All newer OSs are pretty much immune to MFT corruption. If you are using Windows95, 98, ME, then this could happen if you have a power failure during MFT writing. Try runinning CHKDSK without the /F option to see what is reported. Other reason could be imminent failure of your HD.

Re: Is this a virus?

Sukriya Dr Sahaib... I am assuming you are a Pakistani in Indonesia if not then thank you for your reply. I do think this has something to do with my File table..Cuz before i reinsatalled the system and renaming the files to remove the funny characters , at bootup, when it does the system checkup and scan diskds I did have the system reporting problems about fixing file name errors and and some zero entry stuff....

Comming back to what you asked...

I did not have such huge files.
I am using WindowsXP professional.

In the meantime when i try to delete any of the folders and files it does not ....

Re: Is this a virus?

this is not a virus.. :-)

however, say goodbye to these files and folders, try formatting this partition, if u cant, from disk administrator, delete this partition, re-create it and format it to make it usable..

running 3rd party software to recover data at THIS stage is not advisable.. not by me atleast.. (i've seen it happend twice in last 4 years)

Re: Is this a virus?

Yes. I am a Pakistani in Indonesia. No thanks for me then??

Anyways! There is still hope. As you have Windows XP Professional, I would safely assume that you are using NTFS as your file system. MFT corruption on NTFS drives can be caused by damage to NTFS driver (NTFS.sys). I am pasting here a link to Microsoft knowledge base for your perusal. I would really love to try the mentioned solutions myself. Anyways! Best of luck.

Re: Is this a virus?

Dr Sahaib I started with thanking you saying sukriya... but then I thought what if you are not a Paksitani then how will you know i thanked you... so i said thank you... anyways sorry for the confusion.
Now I have 2 Hard Drives on my system and this partation is on the drive that i back up my data. This particular had FAT and not NTFS. I was adivsed in case of a system failure, backed up data on a partation using FAT can be read by any other windows installation once that HD is hooked up in that system. And the same was not true in the case of partation using NTFS...

Faizy
Thank you I did format the partation and I am thinking of using a recovery tool to recover what I can? May i know why you do not advise againt it ?

Re: Is this a virus?

oh no........

Never give up on your data, unless you are absolutely 200% sure that there is no alternative. I don't have much information about recovery after formatting. Googling shows a number of tools though.

Re: Is this a virus?

because it has happend to me twice.. corruption of this nature CAN recreate data based on some theory parameters.. only to keep messing them more..

Well faizy you were right. I quick formated the system. The partation had nothing on it . Then out of the blue ... have this junk...

Re: Is this a virus?

hmmmmm.. can u afford to clean up your system's partition as well? and fresh-install from a RELIABLE cd?

(reliable= bought) cuz EVERY..OTHER....would be not reliable..
