Is there any point going to Pakistan for shopping?

wedding shopping dilema

Hi guys,

I've been reading this forum for quite sometime and just recently have made an account. I live in the US and am getting married next year. I kind of have an issue... I originally wanted to go to pakistan for my wedding shopping sometime in february or march with my mom. But now alot of ppl are saying that it will a waste of money. The tickets alone for me and my mom will be close to $3500, and then money spent there on food and car rentals and gifts for ppl there will probably push the total up to $5000, thats completely aside from any shopping. Now i can go for 2 or maybe 3 weeks but thats it. Lots of ppl keep saying that in 5000 dollars you can buy so many outfits or make jewellery, just order clothes from here or buy from boutiques in the US, plus in pakistan you never know what can happen, if there are hungamas then you'll be stuck in the house cause the stores close and there goes your time to shop. Now im really confused, if i go i get to pick everything and personally be satisfied, but it is a lot of money i can use on other things.

From your personal experiances what would you guys reccomend? Order from here or go to pakistan? And do you know of ppl that have had their jehez outfits made from ppl in pakistan and shipped, and how was the end result?

I would really appreciate the input...

Re: wedding shopping dilema

You're only getting married once. If you feel you happiness and satisfaction lies in you going to Pakistan and picking out all your things personally, then you must! I am also going to Pakistan from the US to do so. I know the 'halaat' are bad and 'hungamaz' are happening. But its not as bad as the US media makes it look. People still have thousands of wedding there in very short periods of time. And look at it this way, no matter how many or how little things you get to pick out, they will be the things 'you' picked out for 'yourself'' on 'your own'.
This is the most important day of your life so far, take a chance, splurge a little, do what makes you happy. Inshallah, everything will turn out impeccable.

Good luck!

I think it's good that you go personally to do all your shopping because I did it all through phone/emails for my wedding and it was very stressful. You'll only get married once so make sure you choose and shop for everything yourself so that you don't regret anything later. About the halaats, you can always hire a guard there too. And for the tickets, someone I know just paid 1400 for ettihad so maybe you can save some money on tickets also?

Re: wedding shopping dilema

I would suggest going to Pakistan.. ticket is not gonna cost you 3500 if you book it now for January/February.. in fact I just checked tickets with some travel agencies in NY and return ticket for Pakistan in January/February is $1275-1300 (PIA) you may even find a cheaper deal for March April if you book now since thats a slow season for travelling to Pakistan!!

Re: wedding shopping dilema

yeah im going in december iA, i booked in september and im paying $1469. you can definitely find a very good deal if you book now.

edited to say: i'm flying to dubai and from there, catching the cheap small airline flights to pakistan.

Re: wedding shopping dilema

Hi Chester,

If i were you i would probably go to Pakistan to do your wedding shopphing. If you are worried about wasting time buying gifts and meeting relatives maybe you and you mom could go to another city. For example if your relatives live in Lahore....go to Karachi for your shopping. For my wedding i actually had everything shipped over from Pakistan but that was 10 years ago..... in dec my sister is getting married in Karachi and we are going over a month before just to do all her shopping. I think you will have a lot more variety and also it will be cheaper to get everything from Pakistan....plus you will have the added bonus of picking everything that YOU want....instead of relying on someone elses choice. Mind you i was happy with my stuff even though the only thing i picked was the color!

hey SGC! if u dont mind me asking u.. from where u got this deal?is it for direct flight to Pakistan..

im in the samme exact situation. But cant back out anymore my tickets are booked. Im getting married inshallah in june and going to pakistan in december but only for 2 weeks. I want to be able to finish as much as school as i can before i get married cause i would have to take off both the summer semesters.
Even though im only going for two weeks atleast i kno i tried my best getting everything needed. Since i have two little brothers my mom will stay home and im going to go to pakistan with my dad and get my moms, sisters brothers , hubby to be and my clothes !

yes wayy to much to do for two weeks but inshallah things will work out fine.
ill pray for myself and you dont worry.

well the thing is i would go with my mom so it would be two tickets... but what you guys are saying makes sense too..... i am kind of picky and thats why i am so scared of relying on other ppl, and even if i order online its so hard to distinguish colors and kaam in pictures.

If anyone has ordered online or from designers in pakistan what would you guys suggest are the best ones?

Re: wedding shopping dilema

Chester, for cheap tickets, call "Shalimar Travels". Google them and call them. They have wicked cheap rates on Pakistan tickets.

Re: wedding shopping dilema

come to pakistan..if i was at your place i was going to do the same but be prepared as anything can happen anytime here...you can get stuck here keep that in your mind.

Re: Is there any point going to Pakistan for shopping?

I also went to pakistan in march this year to shop for my sisters wedding I was in lahore for 4 days didnt buy as much as I would have liked due to the time however I did manage to get a few nice outfits from Liberty & brought a gorgeous outfit from Karma pink which was reduced for 4000 rupees! bargain would definitly go there to shop for my wedding..

Re: Is there any point going to Pakistan for shopping?

If the second out fit was made from scratch, why is there a label int he back?

Re: Is there any point going to Pakistan for shopping?

just comment on the price: things are really expensive in Pak. now...the red dress someone here got for 8k wud not cost less than 10-12k now.

^^Well i got that red dress recently!!! like a month ago!
I got it from Tariq road it was one of those un stitched ones and I got it sewed from my tailor back home. There are still places that you can go to in karachi and bargain.
I think bargain is the key here and if you are getting couple dresses then i am sure they can give you a good deal. It just depends on where you go and yes make sure they dont find out that you are from outside Pak or else you will get it for double its original price.
