Is The Bible More Violent Than The Quran?

It is a long article but very good read.
Is The Bible More Violent Than The Quran? : NPR

As the hijackers boarded the airplanes on Sept. 11, 2001, they had a lot on their minds. And if they were following instructions, one of those things was the Quran.
In preparation for the suicide attack, their handlers had told them to meditate on two chapters of the Quran in which God tells Muslims to “cast terror into the hearts of unbelievers.”
“Slay the idolaters wherever ye find them, arrest them, besiege them, and lie in ambush everywhere for them,” Allah instructs the Prophet Muhammad (Quran, 9:5). He continues: “Prophet! Make war on the unbelievers and the hypocrites! … Hell shall be their home, an evil fate.”
When Osama bin Laden declared war on the West in 1996, he cited the Quran’s command to “strike off” the heads of unbelievers. More recently, U.S. Army Maj. Nidal Hasan lectured his colleagues about jihad, or “holy war,” and the Quran’s exhortation to fight unbelievers and bring them low. Hasan is accused of killing 13 people at Fort Hood, Texas, last year.
Given this violent legacy, religion historian Philip Jenkins decided to compare the brutality quotient of the Quran and the Bible.
Defense Vs. Total Annihilation
“Much to my surprise, the Islamic scriptures in the Quran were actually far less bloody and less violent than those in the Bible,” Jenkins says.
Jenkins is a professor at Penn State University and author of two books dealing with the issue: the recently published Jesus Wars, and *Dark Passages *, which has not been published but is already drawing controversy.
Much to my surprise, the Islamic scriptures in the Quran were actually far less bloody and less violent than those in the Bible.

  • Philip Jenkins, author of ‘Jesus Wars’

Violence in the Quran, he and others say, is largely a defense against attack.
“By the standards of the time, which is the 7th century A.D., the laws of war that are laid down by the Quran are actually reasonably humane,” he says. “Then we turn to the Bible, and we actually find something that is for many people a real surprise. There is a specific kind of warfare laid down in the Bible which we can only call genocide.”
It is called herem, and it means total annihilation. Consider the Book of 1 Samuel, when God instructs King Saul to attack the Amalekites: “And utterly destroy all that they have, and do not spare them,” God says through the prophet Samuel. “But kill both man and woman, infant and nursing child, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.”
When Saul failed to do that, God took away his kingdom.
“In other words,” Jenkins says, “Saul has committed a dreadful sin by failing to complete genocide. And that passage echoes through Christian history. It is often used, for example, in American stories of the confrontation with Indians — not just is it legitimate to kill Indians, but you are violating God’s law if you do not.”
Jenkins notes that the history of Christianity is strewn with herem. During the Crusades in the Middle Ages, the Catholic popes declared the Muslims Amalekites. In the great religious wars in the 16th, 17th and 19th centuries, Protestants and Catholics each believed the other side were the Amalekites and should be utterly destroyed.

Re: Is The Bible More Violent Than The Quran?

The title of the thread is implying that Quran is violent. Disturbing. We cannot take one or two lines out of holy scriptures out of (time and place) context and compare them. For example:

"Slay the idolaters wherever ye find them, arrest them, besiege them, and lie in ambush everywhere for them," Allah instructs the Prophet Muhammad (Quran, 9:5)

This is in context of a war (not for peace time), and misused by many westerners to defame Islam.

Re: Is The Bible More Violent Than The Quran?

They want you to read the whole article that is why they came up with this title. I guess you did not read this article that is why you are complaining . They have clarified the issue you are raising.

Re: Is The Bible More Violent Than The Quran?

There are many aspects to this debate.

Violence in Bible vs. Quran

OR

Violence in Muslims societies vs. Christian societies.

AND

---------------- Violent people using Quranic ayah to support their cruelty
-----vs.
---------------- Violent people using Biblical references to support their cruelty

If you guys understand these (and perhaps additional views) on this topic, then you are just fine.

Otherwise this thread will simply turn out to be Christian bashing, and encouragement of even more violence among pakka Muslims.

:salam: Mirch bhai

What exactly did you like in the article? And for what reasons?

@mirch
hey whats up with the caption??

:wsalam:This article very articulately spells out all the things BPX is talking about in the post below. It will provide good material to those who get indulged in this debate. We all have to face this question many times in our lives.

Thanks for pointing this out , I could not do it better.

I copied the caption which is used in the original article from NPR.

"They make the violence symbolic: Wiping out the enemy becomes wiping out one's own sins. Jenkins says that until recently, Islam had the same sort of holy amnesia, and many Muslims interpreted jihad, for example, as an internal struggle, not physical warfare.

El-Ansary says we are seeing more religious violence from Muslims now because the Islamic world is far more religious than is the West. Still, Jenkins says Judeo-Christian cultures shouldn't be smug. The Bible has plenty of violence. "

INDEED! That is exactly why humans should ONLY learn the peaceful aspects of ALL religions and leave behind self-annihilation, which leads to nothing but confusion, destruction, and wars. Why can't we just accept each others' differences and live in peace? Do we have to fight in the name of GOD? Which is really just an excuse to fight!

To start out I would say that he title gives it a negative connotation. As a matter of fact the very use of the word VIOLENCE in conjunction with the religious scriptures is implicating their teaching to be inclined towards inculcating the followers with justification for uncontrolled use of destructive means to achieve a goal. It s quite important for a writer to use the proper semnatics and terminology to elaborate a point of view. Its impossible to have a balanced discussion about such an article which maintains its foundation on something that forms a questionable context to begin with.

To give any credence to this article is a declaration that Quran does have a violent aspect to it and its comparatively mellower than the Bible. Its an unfair standard to use the context of a war to say that religious teachings inspire violence whether it be Quran or Bible. In Burqas posting all except the first point are factual and actual points of discussion.

I am truly surprised that you find this article a worthy read. It hardly does any justice to the truth of the scriptures. On the same token should we start labelling every country’s counstitution violent because it has a provision for war?

We should definitely be peaceful at all times. When attacked just close your eyes and accept annihilation. Bravo .....

Re: Is The Bible More Violent Than The Quran?

^Who is under attack anyway? Usually the ones fighting in the name of God are in no way under attack. I would understand if someone from Palestine, Afghanistan, or Iraq carries out a counter attack, but what I don't understand is a suicide bomber from Pakistan, or any other muslim country going aroung on a killing spree in the name of God. How can anybody condone such act is beyond me...

good point.

If you read history, even Palestine, iraq, Afghanistan started out like we are in Pakistan today.

They too picked up terror as their mainstay just like F-bombers in Pakistan. When the international community responded, they said

Hai main mer gaeee, mujay marta hai, and the only thing I could now is to spread terror the way PLO, Hammas, and Iraq Sunnis Shias and Afghani Mullah O, and Pakisani Mullah F.

Saddam used to provide state funded places for the "retired terrorists" and send in money for the Pali suiciders' families way before anyone attacked him. He was tolerated by the world, and he thought he could do this $hit forever.

And then look what happened to him. He was found hiding in a hole like anyother cave dweller @rsehole terrorist.

Re: Is The Bible More Violent Than The Quran?

My father is doing a course to become a security assistant at the Airport . He told me that his tutor calmed his voice down and said that all they learn about Terrorism is nothing, but PROPAGANDA. He has to teach him that stuff, though!!!

He said Pakistan is next on the list...There is No doubt that he is right!

To Saddam Hussain he said:

"Do you people really think that the Ruler of Iraq hided in a dirty hole? If you think so, the PROPAGANDA MACHINE REALLY ATE YOU UP"

Where were Saddam's mass destruction weapons? 9/11 was an inside job to justify attacks on Muslims.
Where is the peace in Afghanistan? I though we in the west are so advanced that we stand for human rights, brotherhood, tolerance, love and peace. The only advance mankind throughout the History made was how to destroy, not create!

The real reason for being in Afghanistan is to exploit land and humanity. Tons of Opium are brought to Germany for the Pharmacists so they can create their medicine and rise their profit. Nothing more.

They want to rule Afganistan? The greatest ruler who ever laid his foot on this Earth himself said 3000 years ago that Afghanistan cannot be conquered!

I simply gave you a simple generalized answer based on your generalized principle of accept all the peaceful aspects of all religions and ignore the rest. I did not speak in specifics at all. Was it difficult to reply at the same general level.
