Salaamz all,
my question is:
Is it haram to take stills (pictures) off a camera?
Plus, there are some guidelines (so i’ve heard) that its ok as long as the picture is moving (movies), because it is the “aks” or reflection of a person…but then, that ‘aks’ or reflection stays there , while the individual grows up and can look back to it as a memory…therefore making the movie similar to a pic.
SO whats the deal?

Communist if you want to discuss a cliche it iusd alrite ,but most liberal muslims have adjusted to the faact that many activities which might have been no no no are atleast acceptable if not enthusiastically endorsed or encouraged.
First when you bring such assertion you should have brought the relevant quote from koran or even hadith.Same is the case of music.I dont bring such subjects b/c if you look around ,you can by common sense know thatit can't be a make or break point in any religion.
The development since last 1500 years in general & past 100 yrs is so dramatic that koran &hadith has not even haave words for them in arabic. The interpretion & extrapolation depends upon who your spiritual guid is ,that is we see so many schiusm in Islam over every matter which falls in grey area.
You should also know that IJTIDAD is a concept in liberal muslim there by there is a process by which many scholars can update certain laws & principles in the light of rapidly changing world of ours,.
IMO, “Ijtihad” is not restricted to LIBERAL muslims, rather almost all the scholars agree, based on a hadith by the Prophet (SAWW), that IJTIHAD is the accpeted source of islamic ruling. So this makes it acceptable for both the (so called) LIBERAL and the (so called) “FUNDAMENTAL” muslims. By the way whats the difference between the two?

Re: Pictures… a friend of mine mentioned a fatwa which essentially suggested that picture-taking in the present form, using a still camera, TV, video camera, etc do not fall under the prohibited actions. The reasoning he provided had something to do with pixles and grains (the modern photography and film equipment), which in isolation are not a picture. I forgot the whole fatwa, will try to find out more, if I could get some time, and if you are interested. Ofcourse, taking or watching obscene and lewd pictures are not permissible under any circumstances.

Adios!
Pristine, I understand that the pixels are not pictures in them themselves. But look at non-computer generated drawings or pictures. People use pencil, paints, chalks… But if you look at these things under a microscope, in all cases you would find isolated groups of marks which are not pictures in themselves… And computer generated software can obtain very high resolution, in fact much greater than handmade work. But does that mean that its okay to accept computer pictures and haram to accept hand made pictures?
