Is Sufism a mix of Hinduism and Islam?

" Sufism can possibly bridge the conflict between Muslims and Hindus because it contains elements of both religions.". Is it true that Sufism is a mix of Hinduism and Islam. Is that the reason Deobandi Muslims and Taliban oppose Sufism?

They say Bahai faith too contains elements of Hinduism and Islam

Re: Is Sufism a mix of Hinduism and Islam?

Sufism can surely bring peace between Muslims and Hindus but to say because it's a mixture of Islam and Hinduism is not correct even if you might see some elements of Hindism in it.

Bahai faith is a different religion or cult but Sufism or tasawauf is part of Islam.

Re: Is Sufism a mix of Hinduism and Islam?

yes sufism and taswuf is a part of islam .
please elaborate the elements of hinduism which are seen in sufism .

What are the origins of Sufism?

The evidence of Sufi borrowings from other religions such as Hinduism and Zoroastrianism is certain. The similarities in teachings and ritual are overwhelming. It is no surprise then that the goals of Sufism reflect the pantheism and monism of Hinduism.

The Rifa‘iyya, a major Sufi order which spawned numerous sub-groups and associated branches, was named after Ahmad b. ‘Ali al-Rifa‘i (d. 1182). The practices of this order reveal the extremes to which some Sufi rituals went as the Rifa‘i dervishes “became famous for their extreme practices like eating live snakes and performing various feats with fire.”47 This preoccupation with snakes and fire is clearly paralleled in the practices and rituals of Hinduism.

*In the regions of India , Sufism seems to have had a particularly strong impact. Yet, many Sufis in these areas seem to be influenced by Hinduism. One author, Martin Lings, who is a practicing Sufi, quite boldly states that “Prince Dara Shikoh (or Shukuh), the Sufi son of the Mogul Emporer Shah Jahan, was able to affirm that Sufism and Advaita Vendantism (Hinduism) are essentially the same, with a surface difference in terminology.” Another Muslim scholar, Seyyed Hossein Nasr states that the “orthodox Naqshbandi saint Mirza Mazhar Jan Janan considered the Hindu Vedas as divinely inspired.” *

Re: Is Sufism a mix of Hinduism and Islam?

I don’t know from where you’re getting this fire and snake eating buisness.

Sufism had a long history already before the subsequent institutionalization of Sufi teachings into devotional orders (tarîqât) in the early Middle Ages.[22]](Sufism - Wikipedia) Almost all extant Sufi orders trace their chains of transmission (silsila) back to Prophet Muhammad via his cousin and son-in-law Ali. The Naqshbandi order is a notable exception to this rule, as it traces the origin of its teachings from the Prophet Muhammad to the first Islamic Caliph Abu Bakr.

Re: Is Sufism a mix of Hinduism and Islam?

Sufism seems to be attractive to the Hindus ... that does not make it part of Hinduism. In fact lets turn the question on it's head "what do you think is so similar about Hinduism and Sufism that you have made this thread?"

This is not an attack I mean this in the most humble way and anyone who wishes to reconcile difference and create harmony is a plus plus in my books, but the question begs an answer. It is because I want to prove something. The proof is about perception.

Re: Is Sufism a mix of Hinduism and Islam?

sufism in islam dates back to pious ascetics like saeed b zayd , abu dharr, uthman b mazun , etc amongst sahaba and hasan basri , uwais qurni , amir b abd ul qays in tabaeen ...these people were not deviants but the narraters of traditions and pillars of salaf

i think you are not aware of sufi fiq, founder of sufisum was ibn al arabi, which was verdited by imam ibn taymiah rah, tradition of sufisum is different like hinduisum, i mean arabi sufi have different beliefs, turkish sufi have different beliefs, hundustani sufi have diffent beliefs.

in pakistan position of sufisum is worse, since bhang, churas, music, sajda to grave of sufi and many bida is allowed.

in sufi fiq music is allowed, in sufi fiq dance is allwed, even many musical instrument invented by sufi, like tabubra, sitar, tabla, sarangi, etc.

also for your information famous king akbar was invented deen-e-elahi was also fabricated by two sufi brother named abul fazal and faizi, also mostly sufi have worse beliefs "wahadut-ul-wajud" that mean ever thing is allah and ppl like mansoor and sachal-sarmast killed by there follower due to such beliefs.

Re: Is Sufism a mix of Hinduism and Islam?

almost all religions have borrowed concepts from ancient religions of India, so this should be no surprise. As people trade, move, migrate it is bound to happen

Many believe that Jesus visited India to learn about Vedas and Buddhism. Not sure whether there is any evidence to prove this theory.
