Yes sufisim flourished in Iraq and Iran and most of sufi saints of Indo-Pak belonged to these countries or parts of Afghanistan. But probably the variation of culture that was prevalent in Indian society did not exist in those countries.

Sufism flourished in Egypt, and Turkey too. In Saudia it was suppressed after the rise of Wahhabism.

Anyways Islam is present in many countries having different cultures, and you can see different flavors everywhere. I think the basic reason why Islam spread in the past was due to the flexibility it offered. We will see in the future what impact rigidity will have.
