Is religion separate ?

Culture and religion, are they two separate things or is their any relation between them?

Re: Is religion separate ?

no relationship whatsoever…one must not confuse religion with culture.

Re: Is religion separate ?

Yes there is a relationship.

I.e. Islam teaches us to have sharm haya, pardah, respects for elders (actually for everyone) etc, and you see these elements back in the culture.

Re: Is religion separate ?

Tell me KKF, is religion the oldest or the culture?

Re: Is religion separate ?

When it comes to countries like Pakistan, its not just culture but everything is mixed with religion.

Re: Is religion separate ?

Culture and religion shouldn’t be mixed. There is very thin line between them but if we ignore it for years that thin line vanishes and then the culture becomes the religion and no one remembers the original religion.

A few example would be Niqab (face covering) has no proof in islam (at least i don’t know any hadeeth in which covering of face was forced/asked) but it was part of Arab culture at that time. Now it has become such a big thing in most of the islamic countries (specially pakistan).

Similarly, celebration of prophet muhammad saw birthday has become a religious thing now

Re: Is religion separate ?

depends on the society. if its secular, the link is usually weak and culture is dominated by other factors. if its a theocratic society, its culture is pretty much entirely religious.

Re: Is religion separate ?

Culture and Religion are two separate things in my opinion. Religion takes precedence over culture anytime. But ya see, i believe..we all are conditioned to follow culture and that is how we are created. But at the end…our religion is system itself. So one can follow and uphold culture..as long as it is good and in favour of people. Free of injustices such as racism, pride etc.
