Is Rashid Latif really injured?
By our correspondent
KARACHI: Cricket fans in Pakistan were all asking the same question on Wednesday after the toss in the fifth One-day International between Pakistan and South Africa.
“Is Rashid Latif injured or has he been rested for the last two one-day games,” was the question on everybody’s lips.
The reason for this being that while on Monday at the toss in the fourth one-dayer, captain Waqar Younis had said that Rashid was not playing as he was given a rest.
At the toss on Wednesday he said Rashid was injured and had a slight knee problem. Going by the recent track record of the Board no one really knows if Rashid has been rested or is he really carrying an injury.
But the grapevine has it that the team management decided to rest him for the last two one-dayers after receiving instructions from the ‘top’ that young Kamran Akmal be given a chance. And that Rashid is not carrying any injury.
Now if this is the case then Rashid despite his experience and solid record as a wicketkeeper and batsman should start worrying about his place in the World Cup squad.
Because one can infer that the man at the top and maybe even the selectors might be having second thoughts on reposing confidence in the young keeper Akmal in the World Cup.
And if that happens then good luck to the Board and selectors because like they say there is no substitute for experience in a pressure tournament like the World Cup.
