Is Punjabi a dying language in Pakistan?

  1. because it is not taught in schools as a subject or as a medium of instruction.

  2. because most ‘educated’ parents think it is ‘uncivilised’ to talk to their children in the language.

  3. because it is considered ‘crude’ to talk in Punjabi to your boss or colleagues, specially in the newer breed of private corporations.

  4. because it is never used in any official correspondence.

There is a movement in the Chinese province of Guangzhou to save ‘Cantonese’ from the growing Mandarin influence, for example here and here

I feel sorry for the dying traditions of a rich and colorful ancient language.

Re: Is Punjabi a dying language in Pakistan?

I hate to see that it is not taught as subject in schools and it does not make sense to me like why is urdu our national language. It should have been farsi or some thing if they didnt want punjabi or serayki or sindhi or pashto etc to be the national language. I think all the regional languages are dying in pakistan not just punjabi.

I am not against urdu but why it was chosen to be the national language when so few ppl actually spoke it. why didnt we go for farsi ?

Re: Is Punjabi a dying language in Pakistan?

Punjabi has been opted as an elective subject in the local colleges of Punjab everywhere, from the higher secondry to the post graduate level. We have numerous Masters in Punjabi every year. The literature is RICH in poetry and even modern short stories etc. So there is NO WAY Punjabi is going to die. We are proud of it and we wont let it die.

Re: Is Punjabi a dying language in Pakistan?

A couple of years ago, there was a seminar in Lahore, where some scholars predicted demsie of Urdu in 500 years but said that regional languages including Punjabi would survive.

Re: Is Punjabi a dying language in Pakistan?

Punjabi has had a mini resurgence in recent years and credit goes to folk singers like Nusrat Fateh, Abida Parveen etc. There has been an interest in understanding the punjabi poetry.

Re: Is Punjabi a dying language in Pakistan?

^ LOLz so true :omg:

:lifey: Exactly merey bhai just like my Pathan Khan friends would say you can forgive but not forget

Re: Is Punjabi a dying language in Pakistan?

On a different note.

Most of the people don't think Punjabi as a language of "educated" people. I have seen things in real that people are "labeling" some "Masters in Punjabi" guy 'caz he was not speaking in english in an elite gathering. On his back, peopel were saying .. "he is an illiterate, he does not even know english"

Even it happened to me few days ago in the very forum .. That i talked to someone in punjabi and it was considered harsh. Though those were the literal translation of english sentences Dude, whats up, where have you been?

If we want to keep us language alive then we gota own it ourselves first. As long as we will not own it we can't claim that its gona die 'caz of the goverment or some other issues in our country. Whatever the reason may be, We have to own our own language.

As long as you can speak in english, every single pakistan will consdier you an educated person since they beleive "english" is the language which "educated" people kow.

Re: Is Punjabi a dying language in Pakistan?

Yeah but when i was young i knew Patay Khan the typical archetype Punjabi chap could outwitt and make a fool out of many a proffesor… :omg:

One should know well that Punjabis might not be the most litterate and scholarly sould but hell they sure make up for it with a charming character and awesome attitude and brilliant skill, witty humour, true loyalty and a exceptional capacity to thrive where many other so called smart people would just break down.

Hats of to the Punjabi fortitude. :aliyish:

Many languages from Indian subcontinent will die.

Punjabi is dying because of Partition of India. Indian Hindu Punjabis prefer to speak Hindi than Punjabi, Muslims prefer Urdu over Punjabi, only Sikhs like to speak in Punjabi. Moreover the scripts of Punjabi are different in India (Gurmukhi) and Pakistani.

Sindhi is in worse shape than Punjabi. In India Sindhis have no state, so Sindhi is not taught in schools. Many Muslim Sindhis too prefer to speak in Urdu than Sindhi.

Some how Indian Muslims feel that Urdu is a Muslim language . Many Indian Muslims would reject their mother tongue like Marathi, Konkani and send kids to Urdu medium schools. Urdu and Hindi were spoken both by Hindus and Muslims , somehow it got a communal tone.

In India English and Hindi are killing all languages. Languages like Marathi will die because of Hindi and English. This is one of the reason there is growing anti-Hindi sentinments in Maharashtra. Hindi speakers never learn Marathi in Maharashtra. This has given rise to Marathi based politics which politicians like Raj Thackeray are exploiting.

Re: Is Punjabi a dying language in Pakistan?

^ Yeah but true Mahrathas would be shamed by cowards like Thakerey.

Re: Is Punjabi a dying language in Pakistan?

Re: Is Punjabi a dying language in Pakistan?

My mother's Punjabi-speaking, but all of us were taught urdu. I don't know how that happpened. So I can understand punjabi and speak broken-punjabi :D

That is sad yeah.

Where i live, there are so many women who really look down on punjabi.
Ronay wali baat hai. And this coming from people who consider themselves educated. Really a shame, a big shame.

Re: Is Punjabi a dying language in Pakistan?

Re: Is Punjabi a dying language in Pakistan?
