I heard poetry makes a nation weak. It is an art form which is of no practical use. The evidence given suggests that ‘poetry’ and ‘painting’ were always the two most prized art forms before collapse of a civilization i.e. greek, japanese, roman, greek and mughal.
Because you loose practical view of life. E.g. the mughals were actively promoting art forms like poertry when Europe was promoting philosophy and science. The greeks were promoting poetry when the persians were building their economy.
A lot of Muslims quote the book ‘list of 100 most influential persons in the history of world’ since it gave rank 1 to our dear Prophet (SWS). If you read through, at least 60% persons from from europe, from 1200 AD - 1800 AD, philosophers, scientists, economists and political scientists.
I am not saying that poetry is evil, but it is a luxury a nation can only afford when it is doing well economically and taking care of welfare of its citizens.
Uk's economy at the top in last yr survey
also had Sheakespeare as a poet.
Shakespeare was not 'only' a poet. He is more known as a play writer.
No one knows who actually was Shakespeare as a person though (Shakespeare was a pen name), but everybody knows Newton (same era) and Newton had a huge impact on the history and economy of Europe than Shakespeare.
