Is playing a guitar really unislamic?

Here is why music is not a good thing. It bends emotion, to a false state of being, it enhances what people are feeling, but this is an artificial state of feeling. It is found generally where things like intoxicants are found, it is intoxicating itself in that it releases endorphins which are natural but these create imbalances in mental state and people tend to do things that they would otherwise not usually do, such as loss of inhibitions similar to alcohol music provides the person the impetus to act without fully evaluating cause and effect, by overriding the faculty of reason. Music is also elite and seperates communities and status and people. Music itself provides no benefit in the material sense and people pay for it in the way of entertainment. Entertainment is a luxury and luxry according to Sun Zsu said, that if we get too much of a luxury then it will makes us lazy and arrogant.

So by subjecting oursleves to something Allah has created but has not preferred for us then we are causing the harm to come upon us also, this what Hareem01 means by her statement.

Allah (SWT) will test us with happiness and hardship for us to be thankful and patient but He will also give justice to those who have left this world in the state of injustice, but as far as making choices is concerned Allah (SWT) has given us the choice to seek His Guidance and Protection and quite appropriately given us the choice not to, but to seek our pleasure in music and hence choose to be subjected to more fitna' and ultimately more misguidance.
