Cheegum is right. I have heard this happening in Lahore......even a whole program was aired by Geo TV about robbers chasing passengers and looting them in way especially in Defense and Model Town area.

OR
inform your arrival ONLY to girls father and ask him to keep it secret. He could be more trust worthy person than your own relatives. Wear simple clothes and no gold jewelery.
