Wear sunblock if you're going to apply anything that is a melanin inhibitor.

Kojib acid is "safer" than hydroquinone. But sunscreen is still a must.
But if you're only looking to lighten marks left by acne...and you're willing to use sunscreen diligently, then I'd say just use hydroquinone. It's effective and with diligent use should take are of your acne marks within 2 months or so. Hydroquinone is not safe to use for long-term lightening (for people who're trying to lighten their entire face/body) or for people who don't use sunscreen diligently......but if you're looking to get lighten some acne marks and can keep up with the sunscreen requirement...then that's the best choice.
I've used hydroquinone to lighte marks on my face and did not have any issues. I used it for like 6 weeks and made sure I wore sunscreen anytime I went out. Wal-mart Nadinola Extra Strength is a good choice.

^What she said..
People tend to have problems with Hydroquinone when they get carried away and use it for years on end or at too high strengths or without proper sun protection.. Kojic acid will work but will likely take a LOT longer.. Something else you could try to get rid of your acne marks (and in as little as 7-10 days) would be a peel (TCA, lactic, glycolic etc).. If you do a search there is loads of info on here :)
