Is Jacques Kallis the Greatest Allrounder ever?

Re: Is Jacques Kallis the Greatest Allrounder ever?

aapne inn sabko bhi dekha h khelte hue??

Re: Is Jacques Kallis the Greatest Allrounder ever?

Malcolm nash. That was the guy.

Sobers playing days mainly 1958 to say 1972 I think. TV in Bombay only after 1972 or sometime around that. So those days it was radio commentary and reading newspaper. I remember a Test Match in cheoauk stadium against Windies. Pataudi was captain (1975 I think). He had a poor batting series. But he scored 19 runs in an over against Andy Roberts. My father and I were listening to the radio. He was bowled in same over.

So no never saw Sobers bat live. Relied on newspapers. Free Press of India in morning Times Of India and Indian Express in evening. That is what sports junkies did. And commentary was so romantic. Loved the descriptive commentary. Could picture what was going on.

Re: Is Jacques Kallis the Greatest Allrounder ever?

The best allrounder I have seen play, yes. His batting stats are similar to Tendulkar, only shorter career. :D

Re: Is Jacques Kallis the Greatest Allrounder ever?

really? i thought he was...well, i would pick Gary Sobers then! :)

Re: Is Jacques Kallis the Greatest Allrounder ever?

Barry Richards was sheer class, shame he didnt play test cricket.

I saw Sobers play, what a joy he was.

Re: Is Jacques Kallis the Greatest Allrounder ever?

It has to be Sobers

Kallis does not have the aura of a Sobers or Viv or even guys like Miandad or Gavaskar. You can’t say that the opposition start sh**ting in their pants when Kallis strides out to bat or has the ball in his hands.

It is like comparing Lara and Viv, both great batsmen, but for those of us fortunate enough to have seen both in their prime, Viv was without comparison. He always had an aura of being in command, the ability to know what to do and when to do it. He seemed to have the ability to do things at will, when Windies needed runs he just went out and got them. WI won games they should never have won.

Slightly off topic but if stats’re everything, then Samaraweera (test average 51.29) is a better batsman than Viv (50.23). To even suggest that is laughable indeed!!!

“Richards’ statistics reveal only the bare minimum about possibly the most destructive batsman the sport has ever seen. His lightning hand-eye co-ordination, his flair in the middle and his talismanic performances all combined to make him a player of extraordinary skill and value. His aura on the field, his charisma at the crease and his dominating will to win embodied the West Indies’ cricketing revolution.”

Re: Is Jacques Kallis the Greatest Allrounder ever?

Must have been great to watch Sobers play live.

Re: Is Jacques Kallis the Greatest Allrounder ever?

And one needs to differentiate between batting and bowling all-rounders

Sobers and Kallis are batting all-rounders (better batsmen than bowlers)
Never saw him play but Procter was a bowling all-rounder (a better bowler than batsman)

Re: Is Jacques Kallis the Greatest Allrounder ever?

Love those all white uniforms and black and white videos.

Re: Is Jacques Kallis the Greatest Allrounder ever?

What about Imran Khan. I think he was the best...

Re: Is Jacques Kallis the Greatest Allrounder ever?

He was more of a bowling allrounder

Re: Is Jacques Kallis the Greatest Allrounder ever?

Totally off topic, but Yuvraj's 6 6s seem better than Sobers'. All over the park. Sobers' were mostly great big slogs that were sort of similar.

Not saying Yuvraj is better than Sobers!!!!

Re: Is Jacques Kallis the Greatest Allrounder ever?

Sobers did have 2 sixes over long off 2 deep mid wicket and t deep long leg. Against a spinner only way is to slot.

Yuvraj facing fast bowler had one flick six that was gorgeous. All in all Yuvraj sixes probably shade more stylish.

Re: Is Jacques Kallis the Greatest Allrounder ever?

only 10+ runs  :mocking:

Re: Is Jacques Kallis the Greatest Allrounder ever?

From Cricinfo:

There have been eight instances of batsmen scoring 400-plus runs and picking up 20-plus wickets in a series, Garry Sobers is the only player to do so twice (1962 v India and 1966 v England). Andrew Flintoff is the last player to achieve the feat (in the 2005 Ashes).

Re: Is Jacques Kallis the Greatest Allrounder ever?

We love to live in Nostalgia. Bu if you look objectively Kallis is as good as Sobers is not better. And I am only looking at test record. It will be unfair to Sobers to compare ODI records.

Re: Is Jacques Kallis the Greatest Allrounder ever?

look at the post 38. kallis name doesn't even appear there, while Sobers is in there twice. Just because a player is no longer playing doesnt mean he is not great. Nostalgia has got nothing to do with it. You are entitled to your opinion I am to mine and Kallis while being very good is nowhere near Sobers.
