Well, I never had any issues talking to desi men. I have come across many in my work place and a few in my department who i have to communicate with directly. I do understand ur point though. But i dont think it is wrong just to be polite to say hello/salam. and as for work wise - u have no choice but to talk to them. In my work place there is a desi man who is very traditional and always goes on about him not liking his wife working. Which obviously implies to me that he doesnt like WOMEN to work. But i dont care. im doing my job and his doing his.

I regularly telll my female colleagues that they should stay at home and serve their husbands but they understand that i am kidding.
