Is it worth paying?

i have been thinking for a long time regarding my career i need some help and guidence.i want earn some extra money and want to work (in coming 2years) on my own as a freelance makeup artist. i have recently (in these three months) developed an interest in makeup and beauty products.

i have found out that there is a MAKEUP FOREVER training institute in dubai city center and they are charging 4500 Aed a month 3 times a week for 3 hours

Reality: i am no good in makeup i have recently started practicing on my self. i know( ONLY BASICS) how to choose and apply foundations, blushes, concealors lipsticks, i dont know much about bronzers and i m zero when it comes on eye makeup or hair styles… i want to improve my skills you tube and blogs plus GS guppies has helped me alot but i think i need a certificate to turn this interest into a profession.
but i CANNOT spend the above amount. so what is the other option? how can i pursue my career in this? :hinna:

what old ppl says "pesa he pesey ko kheenchta hai " :hinna:
is it true?

Re: Is it worth paying?

See if there are other courses offered by make up forever, MAC, or other companies. Also, a specialty course might be shorter (and less expensive) than a full course, so you could focus on one area instead of doing a general makeup course.

Re: Is it worth paying?

I think it depends on how motivated you are to push yourself into something like this.

If you look at my thread...I was (and still at times feel) a zero in every bit of makeup.

The courses can teach you a lot so its always a good idea to do them. But if you cannot then you need to outline a crash course for yourself and dedicate a certain amount of time to learning each section of that outline. Like a syllabus almost.

The key is to keep yourself moving, keep learning and never stop practicing because there's always so much to learn! Every MUA I speak to says the same thing...they're always learning.

I paid for private lessons from a MUA. I learned a lot but what helped me the most is practice and constantly researching new techniques, products, etc. I spend a lot of time on youtube and have made up my sisters and friends so many times I forget now.

Its in your hands...all of this. You just have to bring it out.

Re: Is it worth paying?

thanks for writing reha.. i know its all about "Dedication " i dont know how could/should i do it?? i am helpless hopeless :hinna:

Re: Is it worth paying?

I agree with Reha here. Definetly atleast do the course. I think just from doing the course you'll get a feel for whether this is what you want to do or not. Also after the course, maybe you can work part time somewhere that'll give you some more experience and a better understanding of how to get things started with your own freelancing work.
If you enjoy it and are able to give the course a try, I say do it. You never know :)
Worst case scenario, you'll learn very useful things from the course you can use for yourself and you will be the go to girl when it comes to make up amongst family and friends 8D

Speaking of skills, if you youtube something about make up I'm sure you can get really good how to's and tutorials.
Actually, try searching for MichellePhan on youtube, that might be helpful with the skills :)

All the best!

@coughchough thanks for ur input ..i need to work hard :hinna:

Re: Is it worth paying?

You need to be passionate about it. I have been contemplating whether or not to start freelancing as a MUA for so, so long, but I haven't been able to do it not only because i'm short on time but I don't know if I have it in me. I like the makeup I do on myself, but will I be able to deliver results like that on other people? that isn't always the case. Everyone doubts themselves sometimes, and even professionals have things to learn, but what everyone who has succeeded has in common is drive and passion. I haven't given up on MUA dream because i'm passionate about it. I feel like i'm a kid in a candy store when I go to a makeup store, and once I buy something, no matter how late at night it is, i'm not at peace until i've created a look out of it. If you truly want to pursue this, be dedicated, and try teaching yourself like Reha said or then try to get more affordable classes to hone your skills.

Re: Is it worth paying?

You NEED to do this professionally!

Re: Is it worth paying?

^Aww thanks Reha! you're so encouraging :) I wouldn't even know where to begin! i'd need to get so much...but iA one day

Re: Is it worth paying?

Yes reha is right you should do it

Re: Is it worth paying?

i have an arab friend who's friend is a homebased makeup artist i saw her work/pics(arabic MU ) yesterday she has done makeup so neately MASHALLAH she is also arab i was thinking to learn MU from her .. i need ur suggestions ..what would be right for me learning from an institute or from a homebased MUA ?

Re: Is it worth paying?

People tell me to become a makeup artist but I don't have that passion that I see in Reha for example. I love makeup but I do not care about doing it on other people. But then one day I want to create a small line of my own with a tiny collection and feel that you need to be a makeup artist or have some skills when establishing a brand of makeup.

Re: Is it worth paying?

If I could do it at a school...I would. But I cannot right now. Everywhere I have looked...its been hard because my work hours don't line up.

Learn from someone you trust who will teach you what you need to know.

That is really neat...coming up with your own line or products...that would be so cool.

Re: Is it worth paying?

Watch lots of youtube videos and keep practicing. Practice makes perfect!

Re: Is it worth paying?

Definitely^ A lot of youtube makeup guru's didn't take any make-up classes. They just had a passion and practiced and that's how some of them are amazing. I think the best thing right now is PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! So at least when you do start a make-up course, you'll know a lot of information and techniques anyway.

Re: Is it worth paying?

If you are interested in taking a course in makeup so you can work as a makeup artist then it is better to go to a school since they are not a company like makeup forever which essentially have well trained sales ladies working as makeup artists. You can try Sara Kamkarian Training centre I took a makeup course and a beautician courses there two years ago. Their website is www.ng-sk.com, they also have some makeup tutorials on youtube
