…that if you violate a right of Allah, He might forgive you. But if you violate the rights of a fellow human being, Allah won’t forgive you unless the wronged person forgives you first.
I’ve always heard this and I bet many others have as well. But is there a reference (hadith etc) for this? Or is it just a common saying?
It is not a mere saying. Its actually derived from both Quranic verses and Hadith. Once again, I don’t have em memorized so I can’t reference any right now. but I’m sure, a few Google searches will give you better responses than on this thread
It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever has wronged his brother with regard to his honour or anything else, let him seek his forgiveness today, before there will be no dinar and no dirham, and if he has any good deeds to his credit they will be taken from him in a manner commensurate with the wrong he did, and if he has no good deeds, then some of his counterpart’s bad deeds will be taken and added to his burden.” [al-Bukhaari].
like if you don’t offer salah, this is yours and yours Rab matter, nobody is involved in this except you, but if you wrong any person, now the matter is between you and him also, so you should ask forgiveness, ALLAH is indeed merciful and forgiving,so He will forgive you for the sins between you and Him, but if the sin like backbiting, murder, etc the other person is involved to who you have wronged, so forgiveness will depend if that person forgives you.!!
^The exchange of sawab for gunnah is used for general wronging in the hadith above. I’ve heard is user more specifically for gossip. But it makes sense. Thanks.
And what if Allah doesn’t forgive you because said person hasn’t forgiven you? What happens then? Straight to hell , or better work your butt off doing other good deeds to make up for the one you haven’t been forgiven?
I have heard that on the Day of Judgment, Allah will help mediate…as in try to get the person to forgive. But I don’t know how true this is.
@TLK. As for animals, I’ve read that on the Day of Reckoning…even animals… (Maybe the example of rams was used) will receive justice for conflicts that took place only b/w the animals. No sure about authenticity. And there’s the hadith about a woman who went to hell for torturing a cat…so yeah…we’re accountable.
Here is the Hadith.
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Do you know who is bankrupt?” They said, “The one without money or goods is bankrupt.” The Prophet said, “Verily, the bankrupt of my nation are those who come on the Day of Resurrection with prayers, fasting, and charity, but also with insults, slander, consuming wealth, shedding blood, and beating others. The oppressed will each be given from his good deeds. If his good deeds run out before justice is fulfilled, then their sins will be cast upon him and he will be thrown into the Hellfire.”

There is plenty of discourse on the Rights of Allah over human beings and rights of human beings over Allah. But, in summary here is my understanding of it all.
Take for instance, the role of parent to child, the role of boss to an employee, the role community leaders, the role of a teacher, role of government to individual. These all represent a type of authority that naturally demands the right to be followed, listened to and given respect. Sometime out of mere etiquettes but usually due to **authority. **One could choose to rebel against the authority and violate their rights derived from their authority.
Then also, take any personal relationship one has with siblings, friends, parents, significant others, for example - any relationship based on love from the heart. This love drives oneself to allow the beloved to be demanding of oneself, it allows us to extend special privileges and rights over ourselves for our beloved. When we love someone, the beloved can respond in two ways: either by reciprocating the love rightfully with love and respect and dedication, or by being a self-centered, ignorant imbecile who takes it for granted
To me both these concepts of love and authority are reflected in the following Hadith:
*
Muâdh b. Jabal relates that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said to him: “O Muâdh! Do you know what is Allah’s right over His servants and what their right is over Him?”
I said: “Allah and His Messenger know best.”
He said: “Allah’s right over His servants is that they worship Him without associating any partner with Him in worship, and their right over Him is that He does not punish anyone who worships Him without associating any partner with Him in worship.” Sahîh al-Bukhârî and Sahîh Muslim]

what about people who swear in the name of Allah and/or Prophet Muhammad pbuh? supposedly, a person can be very God fearing, and prays alot etc etc.. yet does similar things mentioned below -
for ex. someone says “I was not at so and so’s house last night, Allah ki kasam”. and in reality, that person lied. and in some occasions, repeatedly lies about it. and in this case, it is a known fact that this statement was a lie, because later, the person him/herself said that the statement was false, so it is not assumed.
then what? what happens to all those prayers to Allah and Prophet Muhammed, when you are sitting there lying in their names too?
But, What is worse than lying? Lying in the name of Allah, the Pure, Most High and Absolute…
It is not permissible to swear in the name of anything other than Allah.
Whenever Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him), wanted to state severity, and seriousness of something he would say :" I swear by Him in **whose Hand is my soul"
.
References are there (as given by other members) but I’ll explain it by using very easy wording.
Suppose me and you had a fight and there are chances we forgive each others or at least one forgive another. But In case me had fight with lets say with Tahurra. We come to you to do justice then what you’ll gonna do? Beside that I already had a fight earlier with you and you (by being good person ) forgiven me.
Will you not going to Justice between us by keeping our (mine and yours) differences aside? Of’coz you’ll do Justice between us by keeping our differences aside.
If you understand what I wrote above then you’ll accept it as true.
