Ok my history totally sucks, so I’m hoping someone can enlighten me on this topic. I was reading online on an egyptian forum (dont know how true it is), that Egyptian people aren’t arabs, that they are really african… their ancestry and heritage is more african than it is arab??? I’m confused.
Re: Is it true?
ya, your geography is not so good either, egypt is in africa :)
PS: so are morocco, algeria and tunisia.
Re: Is it true?
^^ hahahah I was just thinking that..
don’t feel bad Sabriya - I was like 40 before I found out Eqypt was in Africa..

Re: Is it true?

get out explore the world ... best way to learn...
Re: Is it true?
yea egyptians are unique in that they can claim both identities- egyptian and arab- they are egyptian because of their long history of egyptian civilization, the pharoahs etc but also arab b/c they now speak arabic and after the arrival of islam also shared a common history and culture with the arab ppl
Re: Is it true?
go to an egyption and say "anta mish arabi"...u are not an Arab.......then run......they claim to be Arabs......but Egypt is in Africa............they play for the African nations yet they dont like to be considerd as African's......weird huh...
Re: Is it true?
^just because egypt is in africa doesnt mean egyptians should identify themselves more closely with african culture and identity - they draw their identity from their past civilization and history and more recent shared history with the arab language and culture
its like saying desis play for asian nations but not all asian nations have remotely the same culture and identity
Re: Is it true?
u are right ....but thats not what i meant i live in egypt i have egyption freinds who are originaly from sudan etc....and they say to me all the time we are not Africans but we are Arabs..........thats why i said weird huh.....
im not trying to disrespect them becz most of them are very nice people and u can have a good time with them........dont matter where they are from...
Re: Is it true?
yea i guess when they say they're not aftrican they mean it in a cultural not geographic sense
u live in egypt! where?
Re: Is it true?
duh ... egyptions are egyptions straight simple and ya he lives in Cairo.

Re: Is it true?
Egyptians are both a part of Arab world as well as Africa. There can be considerable racial differences within Arabic speaking world.

yeah thats right
Re: Is it true?
Depends if your definition of “arabs” narrows down to gulfi arabs like soodies!
But if you go west towards Maghreb, you will find people [berbers] that actually aren’t arabs but have adopted arab language. There is a growing movement there by some berbers who are still defiant about speaking their language but a lot of the berbers feel ashamed? to speak their original language.
ANyway, was there an academic purpose to this thread or something that just popped in your head? ![]()
