and include such information as their place of birth, father’s name and attach a photograph?
Had to review a few resumes for a simple student job at my university. Foreign student Desis (both Paki and Indian) went all out with 5-7 page resumes and some even included their master’s thesis and published papers.
Re: Is it the norm in desh to submit 5-7 page resumes for even simple jobs?
Very true. This person i know submitted a 4 page resume in essay form (font size 8) for a simple tech support position. This is an error than can be easily corrected if proper information on resume building is available more readily for newcomers.
Re: Is it the norm in desh to submit 5-7 page resumes for even simple jobs?
when you say they "included" their masters thesis... you mean some type of an abstract right??
multi page resumes are a norm when one applies for a job in academia or management consulting, and hence, there's a difference between a resume' and a CV.
I maintain a 3 page resume' while my CV spans 12 pages and growing! - it includes a listing of the publications, community service highlights, speaking engagements, teaching credentials etc.
Re: Is it the norm in desh to submit 5-7 page resumes for even simple jobs?
A multipage resume is fine, when applying to a position that justifies it Applying to a simple phone answering/making photocopies job with a multipage resume is just silly.
Re: Is it the norm in desh to submit 5-7 page resumes for even simple jobs?
I can't possibly fit eveything I have worked on in last 10 years, on a single page, even if I only have one line for each major project. Last time I tried, I left out a lot of things but I still couldn't make it fit in one page. Mine is a 3 page long. My references are on the 4th page which I don't consider as part of my resume.
Re: Is it the norm in desh to submit 5-7 page resumes for even simple jobs?
well the thing is that back in Pakistan the first time I applied for a job I submiited a one page resume (the job opening was in my cousin's office). It got rejected and he later told me that people usually put more effort in making a resume and it should be deatiled and everything. So the next time around I sent a three page CV with all sorts of BLAH BLAH in it and I got selected. :) . now that I am in the UK its a different story altogether. So I know where those desi students are coming from.
Moral of the story . Different countries, different CV's.
Re: Is it the norm in desh to submit 5-7 page resumes for even simple jobs?
Resume should only be 1 page not even a full page. The resume is the ONLY thing to grab the employers attention and to make him read ur CV aswell. You have to make urself standout in the resume and u dont do that by writing 5 pages abt this and that. Single most important key point is: Why are YOU best qualified for this position? The arguments for this has to be real specific arguments not just general ones. In the CV you write ALL that u have done and personal skills, social etc.
